Many people admit that crystal meth rehab and detox are two of the most difficult things a person can do. The addict is often craving the substance so much that they give up on detoxification too easily. They often need the help of trained staff and family support to cope with the cravings and intense need for the drug. The withdrawing person is often sluggish, tired and somewhat anxious about not being able to get the drug anymore. They often need a safe place to sleep off the cravings and talk to someone about their symptoms as they are happening.
In crystal meth detox, the mood swings are intense and there can be moderate to severe anxiety and agitation. The person may not be able to sleep or they may be really sleepy from previous sleep deprivation. The drug cravings are so severe in most people that intense supervision is necessary to prevent relapse. The rate of relapse is very high without supervision and it is still somewhat high with supervision.
If the individual survives crystal meth detox and is still ready to go through crystal meth rehab, the person is transferred to the rehab portion of the program. This is usually an intense program in which the person undergoes psychotherapy with cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, informational classes on crystal meth and social services to help the individual get back on their feet. Occupational services may be offered when the addict is getting closer to the end of crystal meth detox and rehab.
There is a lot of putting back together of a person's life when they undergo crystal meth rehab. Relationships are often broken beyond repair and the person often has no job or family to go back to. Some of this can be fixed through careful counseling, including family counseling. Putting back families broken by crystal meth addiction can be extremely difficult, especially if there are other family members still using crystal meth or who are involved in the making of crystal meth. Decisions need to be made as to which family members will be good for the addict's recovery.
Crystal meth detox and rehab takes many weeks to many months and the person needs to be committed to aftercare programs like Narcotics Anonymous. They need to be surrounded by people who understand how difficult it is to recover from this type of addiction and who have the coping skills to deal with the problems of the methamphetamine addict.
