RECAP: - 7:44 a.m. Dec. 14...

- 'The King's Speech' leads movie category. 'Glee' leads TV.
- Matt Damon to present Robert De Niro special award.
- Depp nabs two in comedy category.

Remember they have two "Best" picture categories. They split the comedy and musical off and then have drama. What does that mean? Certain nominees in the comedy category are surely for show and have no chance for Oscar.
Meanwhile, TV categories are included which makes for a fun night of power plays. Where do you sit when a TV star is in the room and so is a movie star?
Note also when a movie star gets a TV nod. Always seems like they are the favorite after that.

Partial list and reaction:

Best Motion Picture, Drama
"Black Swan"
"The Fighter"
"Inception
"The King's Speech"
"The Social Network"
Note: All these movies made my top ten list so I'm happy here. "The King's Speech" is the frontrunner here since it's a category known to swing the British way. No problem for me. Hands down it's the best of this bunch. Right now, "The Social Network" has momemtum judging from the early critic awards and lists. However, that doesn't always matter. The early MO may not help.
Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical
"Alice in Wonderland"
"Burlesque"
"The Kids Are All Right"
"Red"
"The Tourist"
Note: "The Kids are All Right" has to be the favorite because the others are thrown in simply to fill out the category. Come on, "Burlesque" and "The Tourist."
Best Director - Motion Picture
Darren Aronofsky - "Black Swan"
David Fincher - "The Social Network"
Tom Hooper - "The King's Speech"
Christopher Nolan - "Inception"
David O. Russell - "The Fighter"
Note: So goes the director so goes best picture. Stop for a moment with the Globes. And notice there are no comedy or musical directors here. Not a good sign for come Oscar time. Still, Oscar has 10 in the Best Picture category. Hollywood loves the boxing movies and "The Fighter" gets a boost because of it.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
Jesse Eisenberg - "The Social Network"
Colin Firth - "The King's Speech"
James Franco - "127 Hours"
Ryan Gosling - "Blue Valentine"
Mark Wahlberg - "The Fighter "
Note: Fantastic category. "Blue Valentine" gets a saver with that R rating, up from NC-17. James Franco will host the Oscars and has the nod here as well. I though the actress category would be the toughest and most competitive this year. Now, I'm not so sure. This is huge. I give the edge to Firth right now. Wahlberg gaining and Franco was out in front early.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama
Halle Berry - "Frankie and Alice"
Nicole Kidman - "Rabbit Hole"
Jennifer Lawrence - "Winter's Bone"
Natalie Portman - "Black Swan"
Michelle Williams - "Blue Valentine"
Note: Just predicted for me on this one, including Halle Berry. Portman probably is out front but the performance of Lawrence in "Winter's Bone" was a winner.
Best Animated Feature Film
"Despicable Me"
"How to Train Your Dragon
"The Illusionist"
"Toy Story 3"
"Tangled"
Note: "Toy Story 3" and "Tangled" to tussle for this own.
Best Foreign Language Film
"Biutiful"
"The Concert"
"The Edge"
"I Am Love"
"In a Better World"
Note: Can't go wrong with the top one since it's spelled that way.
Quick hits:
Actress comedy:
Annette Bening
Julianna Moore
Note: For the same movie, "The Kids Are All Right."

Actor comedy
Johnny Depp - "Alice in Wonderland"
Johnny Depp - "The Tourist"
Yes, twice. "Tourist" is now a comedy. Wow.

Supporting for Movies, Drama
Christian Bale - "The Fighter"
Michael Douglas - "Wall Street 2"
Jeremy Renner - "The Town"
Geoffrey Rush - "The King's Speech"
Note: Missing Gabriel here I think. Douglas in for the wrong movie. His best performance last year was in "Solitary Man."

EARLY PREDICTION BEFORE ANNOUNCEMENT: SINCE IT'S THE FOREIGN PRESS, LOOKING FOR "THE KING'S SPEECH" TO DO WELL HERE...
