"Ugly Betty" won in the musical/comedy series category, and the star, America Ferrera, won for best actress in the musical/comedy category, two of the Desperate Housewives, Felicity Huffman and Marcia Cross, as well as Mary-Louise Parker and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. It was one of the biggest surprises of the night. An emotional speech by the star left some in tears.
Jennifer Hudson, previously known as being voted off American Idol, won for Best Supporting Actress for "Dreamgirls". "Dreamgirls" also won Best Picture, Musical or Comedy and Eddie Murphy won for Best Supporting Actor in the film, beating out Brad Pitt, Jack Nicholson, Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg.
A speechless Forest Whitaker won for Best Actor in a Drama for "The Last King of Scotland". He beat out Leonardo DiCaprio who was nominated twice, once for "Blood Diamond" and once for "The Departed", Peter O'Toole, and Will Smith.
Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy went to Sacha Baron Cohen for "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan", who made the most entertaining acceptance speech of the evening. He beat out Johnny Depp for "The Pirates of the Caribean: Dead Man's Chest".
Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy went to Meryl Streep for "The Devil Wears Prada", who joked that she thought she had worked with everyone in the room, while Best Actress Drama went to Helen Mirren for "The Queen".
Though none of it's stars won, "Babel" took home Best Picture, and award given by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, still on crutches from his recent surgery.
Kyra Sedgwick won for Best Actress in a Drama Series for "The Closer", and another surprise, Hugh Laurie won for Best Actor in a Drama series for "House", beating out front-runners Patrick Dempsey and Keifer Sutherland.
Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy Series went to Alec Baldwin for "30 Rock" who thanked his daughter. "I want to thank my daughter, for her artistic inspiration." He said, going on to joke, "I asked her 'What should I thank you for?' and she said, 'My artistic inspiration'."
Best Drama Series went to "Grey's Anatomy" as expected, though the stars were overlooked.
Warren Beatty took home the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement.
The Golden Globes are often looked at closely, as it is traditional that the winners automatically have an edge for the Oscars. Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker are both considered front runners for the Oscars.
