In a small Texas town with a population of about 200 you will find some of the best sweet potatoes in the country. Each year in October Golden has the famous Sweet Potato Festival. The Festival has even been featured on Oprah!

The Golden Sweet Potato Festival began in 1982 when a local radio station owner thought it would be nice to have a community wide get together to help with the upkeep of the town's community center. What started out as a small town get together has now grown into one of the biggest festivals in the county.

The Sweet Potato Festival is an all week event. It begins early in the week with pageants for the little ones. They have a Mr. Tater Bug, Miss Curly Fry, and more!

In the latter part of the week you can catch some great music playing in the pavilion. They have a gospel night and a country night.

On Saturday during the festival they have baking contests, livestock and sweet potatio auctions. There are lots of booths set up with all kinds of goodies for sale! To satisfy your appetite you can find corn dog stands, turkey legs, kettle corn, funnel cakes and lemonade stands.

The Sweet Potato Festival has plenty of activities to entertain the kids. They have rock climbing, bounce houses, pony rides, and even a mechanical bull.

On the friday evening before the festival they have muttin bustin for the young cowboys and cowgirls. For those who may not just what that is,it's riding on the back of a sheep! My son and his cousin both won 1st place in their age division last year.

You can also check out the tractor pull and horseshoe tournament. The Golden Sweet Potato Festival is famous for it's grand parade. You can find the locals, and some non locals, with their antique tractors, cars, hot rods, horses, and creative floats in the parade. Miss Texas always makes an appearance at the festival too. You can see her in the parade and also in the afternoon at the pavilion.

If your not too puckered out at the end of the day you can stick around for the dance that night under the pavilion.

If your in the neighborhood the last week in October I invite you to come check the festival out! You won't be dissapointed! For more information about the Festival you can check out their website.
