Goldeneye 007 (N64) Classic Review

Matt Remley
GoldenEye 007 was a game years ahead of its time, and one of the few video games based on a movie to actually turn out good. Developed by Rare and released in 1997, GoldenEye 007 is based on the 1995 James Bond film. After its release the game sold over eight million copies and collected rave reviews from several gaming magazines from around the world.

Keep in mind that GoldenEye 007 wasn't popular simply because it was a James Bond themed game, although that may have something to do with some of its popularity. The game reached new levels of gaming, and helped shape most of the first person shooter games we know and enjoy today. Everything about this game was perfect for its time, especially the multi-player.

Game Play

Most of the game play featured in GoldenEye 007 was based on events of the movie. In fact, players could think of it has an interactive version of the film where they can play as James Bond himself. The story is set in Arkhangelsk, USSR during the mid-1980s when it is discovered that there's a secret chemical weapons facility in Byelomorye Dam.

James Bond then has to infiltrate the dam and investigate, stealth style. One of the major points to this game is trying to kill enemies before being seen, keep in mind that enemies do react to seeing their friends get mowed down randomly. In the single player mode, headshots are very important to the survival of players, but limb shots are also useful as players were able to disarm enemies.

On the other hand, the multi-player of GoldenEye 007 is also an important aspect when discussing this game. Although players weren't able to battle against computer AI with their friends, they could only fight against friends in one of several levels and other different game play modes. For example, License To Kill mode allows for one hit kills on every weapon.

Controls & Sound Effects

GoldenEye's 007 controls were about as good as they could get for that time in gaming history. The Nintendo 64's controllers may have felt awkward for certain gaming genres but actually fit perfectly for first person shooters. Players moved James Bond around with the joystick, and fired with the Z button underneath the controller, almost like they were pulling a trigger.

The sound effects of GoldenEye 007 were equally amazing. Players could actually hear when they were being fired at, and what direction it was coming from, which was handy in some single player levels where snipers may be firing at you. Also, the graphics of GoldenEye 007 were fully 3D and impressive at that time; with the developers team's faces being pasted on different characters throughout the game.

Conclusion

Overall, GoldenEye 007 gets a perfect five out of five. Interestingly enough, over the years many games have come out attempting to mimic the game play of GoldenEye 007. Currently the only thing GoldenEye 007 fans have to hold onto is that the later released Perfect Dark was developed by Rare also and was just a modified version of the game.

The later released Time Splitters game also shared some developers with GoldenEye 007, and the game featured references to the game. Sadly, a port of GoldenEye 007 onto Xbox Live or the Wii Store is unlikely although Nintendo, Microsoft, and Rare have been in talks regarding the game for a while now and everyone knows how much money this game could make if re-released.

Looking to purchase GoldenEye 007? Sadly the game itself is pretty hard to find seeing as the game is no longer made. Some gaming stores like GameStop still carry it, but you're most likely going to have to buy online. Until that opportunity comes up, why not freshen up on your James Bond film knowledge with GoldenEye on Dvd by Clicking Here.

Final Score

5/5 - Perfect - (5 Being Perfect, 1 Being Horrible.)
