Goldilocks Cashew Polvoron: A Product Review

Randy Batay-an, PTRP
Having snacks, desserts or just anything that thwarts the appetite helps to keep you focus whatever is that which occupies the miniature offices of your cerebrum. Such a goal is of course may be achievable with candies, juices, biscuits, nuts, coffee, etc. While others prefer to achieve it by hastening the aging process of their lungs.

By observing what preference people have, keen- eyed friends or relatives easily get the idea for a simple gift. And if your gastric machine like mine reject nothing then expect a variety of them anytime. In fact, variety of snacks, desserts or whatever is that that the more tongue savvy people would call it, would make any time more exciting, if not productive.

Let us see if this product merits addition to our list.

This product review takes us to a glimpse of "GOLDILOCKS CASHEW POLVORON"; its packaging, ingredients, nutritional values and taste test. Read on.

The Product. It is labeled Goldilocks Cashew Polvoron.

Packaging. It is a paperbox container with elegant simple and attractive presentation. It contains 24 pieces of candy- sized pillow packed polvoron.

Goldilocks have invested on packaging such a common product when other producers were contented with plastic wrappers. Not only that it is a courageous move but also that the effect is amazing. I could imagine a possible scenario wherein recipients unaware of the label would think they have just had one those expensive imported chocolates. It is a long gone marketing idea still working miracles.

Ingredients. Of course soft wheat flour; and the skim milk, vegetable shortening which may contain coconut oil and palm oil, sugar, cashew nuts, iodized salt and artificial flavorings.

Product storage. You can choose to abide by these instructions, as if you still have something to store once you have openned it.

Alright it says, "store polvoron in a cool, dry place. Do not place the product in congested or tightly spaced areas or containers... You may refrigerate for longer shelf life".

Nutrition Facts. Serving size is two pieces (26 g or .9 oz) making serving per container at 12. The amounts per serving in percent daily values based on 2,000 calorie diet is as follows: total fat 5 g= 8% (saturated fat 4 g= 20%), transfat 0g, cholesterol 0mg, sodium 30 mg= 1 %, total carbohydrate 16g= 5% (dietary fiber 1 g= 5%, sugars 8 g, protein 3g) and calcium 4%.

Other necessary information. For delivery call: 888-1-999, Goldilocks' delivery service "Handa" line. Surprisingly, for this product the service is available for Metro Manila and Rizal only. However, it is available for purchase in most Goldilocks outlets nationwide. A list of stores nationwide is available in their website.

Other flavors being offered are "pinipig", peanut and classic. These flavors reflects real Filipino preferences when it comes to simple bite- sized snacks. Other flavors include cookies- and- cream and chocolate.

I can not ascertain from Goldilocks if delivery is covered in their "Padala program".

It is manufactured for Goldilocks Bakeshopr Inc., 439 Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong City, Tel. Nos. 532-4050 to 57 local 224 (with website address www.goldilocks.com.ph) by: The Caramel Pearl Inc. (a member of the Goldilocks Group of Companies).

Taste Test. I do not know where the claim "... crunchy cashew nuts" came from. But crunchy or not the product's taste is excellently sweet added with a bite tasty cashew nuts.

Conclusion. Polvoron is one easy preparation which makes it a comon delicacy in the country. It is easy to avail of polvoron from anywhere like Baguio City Market stalls, your school's canteen, cooperative stores, and elsewhere. There is just a lot of homemade polvoron around town especially tourists destinations. It makes for a sweet company while strolling around, working at your desk or gift ("pasalubong"). However, if your gift ("pasalubong") does not make your target recipient turn away from that which occupies him or her then it possibly does not count. And how will it work magic when the whole lot of your gift are stuffed in those pesky plastic bags that gets accumulated and contributes to floods? Most certainly, this product's packaging works the trick best. And the blend of a couple of common Filipino delicacies or snacks will move everyone around you.
