Golf: Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Fairway Wood Review

Is This a Driver or a 3-Wood?

The Big Bertha line is really making a comeback with a new name. Diablo. In my last review I went over the Callaway Golf Big Bertha Diablo Driver with some very, very good results. Now it's on to the fairway woods!

The Callaway Golf Big Bertha Diablo Fairway Woods feature the Edge Technology like the Drivers. This new technology makes for a higher Moment of Inertia for greater accuracy via a very stable club head. As in the driver review, this is a bit of an odd almost square look, but it is easy to get over.

A VFT Face is used in the fairway woods and is the perfect design for higher balls speeds with the fairway woods. It gives a large portion of the face what I call a "Hot Spot" and makes these fairway woods very, very long! In fact, this is the longest fairway wood I have ever hit!

I'll have to say, that off the tee the Neutral 3-Wood I tested is a beast! It flies on a very good trajectory and does not balloon like some other game improvement fairway woods tend to do. It is easy to work the ball with this club, which is a plus, but I do have one problem: The SIZE!!

I feel these are more along the lines of the last version of Big Bertha Fairway Woods in that they were very hard to get airborne. Don't get me wrong, it is a very good club, but the size of this club is not what most armatures would call confidence inspiring when set down behind a ball. When you put a good swing on them, thy do hit the ball a ton don't get me wrong, but for the average player who is only on the course once a month, this will not be an easy thing to do.

If you are a solid fairway wood player looking for more distance and accuracy, or a golfer looking for a 3-wood to hit off the tee instead of a driver, then the Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Fairway Wood is for you. I would look elsewhere however if your fairway wood game is marginal as I feel it will be to difficult to get the ball in the air, as well as the mental block of setting something that is large as a driver from just a few years back! Check out some of my previous fairway wood reviews and stay tuned for some more lately this week!
