Golf Club Headcovers: Fashion or Function?

Golf headcovers or golf club headcovers, as some call them, are the hottest rage on the course. All of us like to make a statement while playing a round and we do that by carefully selecting what set of clubs we play with, what shirt, shoes, hat or belt we wear, and even what we use for a ballmarker. The newest accessory on the course these days is the golf headcover.

Let's talk about fashion first. Yes, the golf club headcover you select makes a statement about your personality and isn't that what fashion is all about? Natalie Gulbis, who plays on the lpga tour, uses a "swan" headcover for her driver, Ernie Els, who plays on the pga Tour, uses a "lion" headcover for his driver and of course, Tiger Woods protects his driver with a "tiger" headcover. There is even a website dedicated only to this accessory and there are 100's of choices to select from. From cartoon characters such as popeye, big bird and pink panther to your favorite NFL team or favorite flower, to the likeness of your beloved pet such as a black lab or tabby cat, we can all be sure to find a golf headcover that makes a statement about who we are and what we like.

As for function, yes, golf club headcovers are a must. Initially, the manufacturer of the clubs would provide these free of charge with the purchase of your set. And while they are usually used for your drivers and woods, putters and irons are now adorned with them also. They protect the clubs from banging against each other in your bag while driving around the course. None of us like to have our clubs scratched, dinged, or beat up. Many of us even clean them after every round and I recently played a course in Florida where after dropping off my cart, the attendant asked if I'd like him to clean my clubs for me.

While it's golf season all year long in some parts of the country, we are just gearing up for it here in the northeast. So, clean up your clubs, try on your shoes, freshen up your wardrobe and be sure to make a statement with a new golf club headcover.
