Golf Club Review: The Cleveland CG Gold Iron

An Iron for Every Player!

MikeBabjak
Cleveland golf has been around a good 20 years now. While they have recently been under new management and have just been bought out by Srixon Golf, they continue to make some of the best equipment in the world. Known for their wedges first, Cleveland has begun a transformation into a company that brings out great products throughout the bag.

The CG Gold iron is made for the average player and its long irons are even used on the PGA Tour by Cleveland Golfs Tour Staff. The clean, classic look at address hides the game improvement features of this club while so that people don't feel like they are hitting a shovel! The new Micro-Cavity Technology increases forgiveness and is much deeper than the CG Red iron.

The irons also feature more offset and a larger head head than the CG Red's, two very important features that the mid to high handicap desire in an iron. The soles are also wider to prevent digging and weight is more concentrated around the perimeter of the club head to produce a more forgiving club head. Cleveland has also begun to mark the lie angles on the heads with a series of color-coded markings on the hosel to determine if the club is flat, upright or standard.

When I first set these irons down last month I was impressed at how good they looked when I set them down. For a game improvement iron, they looked great and were very forgiving when I hit a few off the toe and heel. The ball really had a high flight and it was a little hard to hit knock down shots and fades with this iron, but they are designed to be forgiving, go high, straight and long!

I noticed they did go a few yards further than the CG Red irons, but not enough to make the shot maker switch to them and sacrifice being able to get the ball back to tightly tucked pins by working the ball left or right.

I would definitely suggest these irons to anyone looking for a more forgiving set of irons. .They look and feel great and despite being a little big for my taste, were a lot more pleasant to look at than some of the other game improvement irons out there. I would also check my review of the CG Red if you are a little better player looking for some forgiving players blades, and don't forget to check the rest of my reviews on other Cleveland products!
