Golf Clubs: the Bigger the Better?

How Big is TOO Big?!?

While the maximum size for the modern day driver in golf is 460cc's, this has not stopped manufacturers by further stretching the other limits go golf club design.

Companies from every price point are doing things to golf clubs to make them easier to hit than ever before! The new and most obvious is the square driver ,(see previous article by me) but we are now seeing golf clubs with triangular shapes as well. Whats the deal you ask? I'll tell you.

The new buzz word for the next few years is MOI, or Moment Of Inertia, the golf clubs ability to stay square through impact even on off center hits. This is achieved many ways, weather it be through an exaggerated shape or internal weighting, every company out there is touting their "high MOI" drivers. From the head, even to new shafts, the higher the MOI number, in theory, the more stable and more accurate the head will be.

The MOI of a driver is increased by moving weight out the the edges of the club head, the further back you can put these weights will also make for a higher launch angle, making the club easy to get airborne. I have hit several of these new styles of heads and while they do feel more stable at impact, they look absolutely huge!! The club manufacturers have found ways to stay within the 460cc mark while expanding the head to make it longer. There is a current limit on how far back the club head can go and it is around 5"! Think of that if you have not been able to see one of these monsters yet, a whole 5" of club behind the ball! It defiantly does have its functions but for me it took many swings to get adjusted to the sight of it all!

Other means of making these large clubs more forgiving are adjustable weights. I will cover these beauties in another topic, but imagine being able to go from a straight ball then being able to hit a 5-10 yard draw or fade by simply moving a few weights around in the head!

These new drivers are making a bigger splash in the golf business than the original oversize metal heads from just 15 years ago, and its not just due to their large size! Get out to your range and demo one of these bad boys and you just might be putting one in your bag for next season!

I always thought the bigger the farther the ball goes!
