Golf Review: Titleist 909D2 Driver Review

In my last review, I had a chance to look at the Titleist 909D COMP. While this driver is certainly geared towards the mid to high handicap players out there, the new Titleist 909D2 is for those inching their way towards becoming a better layer. The 909D3 Driver will still be a very long and forgiving driver no doubt, but there are some differences.

The Titleist 909D2 driver is an all Titanium driver, unlike the 909D COMP which featured a carbon crown. This will make for a slightly lower ball fight, and in the long run, be just slightly less forgiving than it's bi-material brother.

The 909D2 features a 460cc head with a traditional pear shape look. I prefer this look as I feel it instills confidence in any player, and this is a good thing. I feel their Triangular D1 driver was a little out of touch with their main customer base, which is the player who prefers a golf club that looks like a golf club!

Gone is the traditional Titleist bore through, and added is a weight screw both designed to perfectly match the head and whichever of their many custom shaft and grip options you choose from. Like the COMP, the 909D2 features a milled face piece with a trapezoid design to maximize spring effect on most of the club face.

Add it up and what do you get? Let me tell you...

This for a "non players" driver is a great club from Titleist. It features modern playability with classic good looks which players of all skill levels can appreciate. The many shaft and grip options are a plus, and when fit by a proper club fitter or golf pro, you can get yourself into a loft, length, flex, and grip combo that will have you hitting great shots for the New Year.

This club to me looked great and felt great when I got a chance to hit it just last week. Miss hits were forgiven, and the sound and feel were the usually Titleist stock, which is good and better! I was able to hit draws and fades with this club with no problems at all and was even able to hit a few low runners as it was a windy day at the range. Of course, the one thing I do not like and may have told everyone before is the lack of of a solid 1 piece face, or "cup face" design. I feel this is the best way to maximize distance, accuracy, and feel across an entire clubface in today's modern drivers, and once again, Titleist decided not to share my opinion!

Overall, this is a great driver from Titleist! The 909 D2 will get you out there and in the fairway time and time again. While I still feel Taylor Made makes the best drivers out there, (and although I am using a Macgregor MT460, again the cup face thing) Titleist is working in the right direction.
