Golf Tips: Four Ways to Increase Your "Power Swing"

Mya
All golfers want more power.

Let's look at four areas to improve your distance.

First is the idea of arc. Jack Nicholaus in his hay-day was the long golf ball hitter and he went very high with his hands for a very long with a high arc. How we do that is we stretch that arm a little higher across and he actually let his right heel raise a little bit to give him some more arc, on the way back.

The modern swing has to do with width. Adam Scott, these young players, they go wide with it, they get the club as far away from the ball as possible. Their arc is going wider, Nicholaus went high, Scott goes wide.

The third way is through leverage, Sergio Garcia does this better than anyone. He uses his wrists almost like a whip and a hinge to bring him back through. Grip pressure has to be light and you have to trust that the club is coming right back to the golf ball.

Finally the fourth area, which is the most important, is your sequencing on the down swing. I could have a great back swing, huge arc and a lot of width but if I don't come down in the correct order with my body parts you're not going to hit the golf ball very far. So it's going from the ground up and learning that my lower body goes first, the mid section and then the upper body comes through as I come to impact. Just like throwing a baseball, step, turn, throw.

So what you want to do is find out what method works best but then always get back to great sequencing on the way down. When you put it together you want to be able to have either the arc swing the width swing or the leverage swing matched with great sequence on the way through.
