Golf Tips for Women

How to Level the Playing Field

Jeremy Staffeld
Without a doubt, most golf courses were designed with male golfers being the main focus. Unfortunately this has left the average woman golfer scratching their heads wondering how they stand a chance at reaching the green within regulation. Have you ever walked up to the red tees and wished you could move them up even more? You are certainly not alone, however there is actually no reason to get frustrated already.

Women should understand that physical prowess is not the key to scoring low consistently. In fact accuracy, which most women greatly excel at, is the best key to success on the golf course. Hitting accurate shots can make up strokes that are lost in raw distance quite easily. Polishing your short game is another important aspect when considering that most strokes are won or lost within 100 yards of the green.

One common problem that women golfers experience is with their grip. While all golfers struggle with attaining the best grip pressure, the average female golfer struggles to hold their grip at the top of their swing. This results in a quick re-gripping on the downswing, which can cause all sort of loss of control of the clubhead at impact as well as a loss of distance from an inefficient swing.

To fix this, you should practice swinging the club back with just your left hand. This reinforces the need to grip firmly with your last three fingers. Practicing this drill enough with build muscle-memory into your swing and the strength to grip firmly in the correct way.

Since most strokes are won or lost within 100 yards of the green, here is your chance to make an impact! Practice chipping around the practice green before your rounds until you are comfortable hitting the ball close to the hole from just off the green. Always remember that those short little chip shots equal the same strokes that masculine 300-yard drives do. Chances are a close chip shot will knock even more strokes off in the end because it will set up a much easier putt to sink.

The putting green is an excellent opportunity to gain strokes on your male playing partners because any supposed physical advantage they had up until now is completely gone on the green. Remember two simple keys to putting well: swing the putter like a pendulum, and focus on lag putts to a 2 foot circle - not the small cup - think 2 putts and you'll always avoid putting 3 times or worse.

Golf is one of the few sports where both men and women compete on the exact same playing field together. With these simple keys to think about, you will find yourself much more confident when you reach the first tee - determined that you CAN outscore the boys.
