Gone the Innocence of Halloween

Personally I No Longer Care to Celebrate Halloween!

Faith Draper
There was a time I loved Halloween. Not the same as Christmas or my birthday but each year I looked forward to the holiday. For weeks before the special day my friends and I would discuss what we were 'going to be for Halloween'.

There was no question in those days our costumes whatever we decided on would be homemade. You didn't run down to Wal-Mart or the Costume Factory and pay for a costume. Two of my favorite costumes were Goldie Locks and the Three Bears and a Pumpkin.

Goldie Locks was easy, a gingham dress, apron, and a yarn wig styled in two braids. For an accessory I carried the 'Three Bears' stuffed animals which had been a gift to one of my younger sisters earlier that year. The following year I was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz with pretty much the same outfit but the bears replaced by a basket & a stuffed dog.

The pumpkin was much more involved but well worth the effort. Mom had acquired some chicken wire which we formed into the shape of a pumpkin complete with the stem on top. Orange crepe paper was then used to cover the chicken wire and a little green for the pumpkin stem. The greatest thing about this was the pumpkin covered almost my whole body and inside there was a little 'shelf' where I could keep a stash of treats.

Treats, that's a whole new subject. Back in those days we went from door to door, it didn't matter if we knew the people or not. There were fresh made pop-corn balls, caramel and candy apples, homemade cookies and fudge, and usually at least one house in the neighborhood would have fresh apple cider and donuts.

Back in those days there wasn't discussion about the evil behind the holiday or the expense of costumes & packaged candy to hand out. There wasn't the fear of poison in candy or other dangers. We looked at Halloween as a day to dress up and pretend we were something else and to enjoy so really good special treats.

The innocence of Halloween is gone and so is the joy and fun. I dread deciding will I hand out candy or will I be so strapped I can afford it and will have to hide behind closed doors pretending I'm not home? I know I won't be dressing up this year or any in the future. The fun has just gone out of it over the years. I guess you can call me the Scrooge of Halloween but that's ok I still have my memories of happy times at Halloween when it and I were innocent.

Ok, this has just been more of Faith rambling but was on my mind so thought I would share!

To memories of a simpler time.

I'm sometimes surprised by the number of older teens trick or treating, boys who look downright scary and menacing. I don't feel like opening my door to a pack of five 16 year old boys I've never seen before. One young woman who looked about 17 came to my son's house and awhile later he saw her sitting in a car breastfeeding a baby! I think that's a clue that it's time for her to stop trick or treating.

Most definately the fun holiday has been stolen by the adults who use it as an excuse to party and get drunk. I just wonder how many children have their night ruined by adults in their lives who have over indulged. So sad that that today's children are being robbed of their childhoods.
PS I think I'll log off this site now because it seems like it is not yet working correctly. Although I Logged in tonight it didn't seem to take.

I agree, I enjoyed it as a child in my little homemade outfit. I don't like all the blatant evil now tho.

Did your area decide to have trick-or-treat night a day early this year? There was a lot of confusion in my area because different cities and towns made different decisions.

You're right. The innocence is gone. Parents now have to be creative to make it a safe fun day.

I love Halloween but mostly missed it this year :)

The roots of Halloween show it is a non-Christian holiday...

It is so sad now. Parents have to worry and be so careful. Kids should be able to enjoy Halloween as we did but they are not able. I too miss the days when it was a fun event. At least, for the meantime, they have parties at school still. But you are right, the fun, free, enjoyable time has been lost along with the creativity for some. There are still many parents and kids making costumes and decorations...and having parties at their homes. Yea for them!
