Good and Bad Luck Theatre Superstitions

For those theatre geeks out there, here are some good and bad luck superstitions. I am usually not a superstitious person but when it comes to theatre, I am probably the most superstitious person in the building!!! Please feel free to leave a comment below telling me some of your theatre superstitions!

Good Luck Superstitions:
1)It's good luck to wear a wig
2) Visitors must enter a dressing room with their right foot first
3)when you leave your dressing room, leave with the left foot first
4)It is Good luck to fall once during a performance
5)To stave off bad luck during the performance, trip when first going onstage
6)it is good luck to be pinched before your performance
7)Have dolls and other lucky charms in the dressing room
8)if you spill powder, dance on it for good luck
9)accidentally smear lipstick on your teeth when you are putting it on your lips
10)If you kick off your shoes and they land on their soles you will have good luck
11)a bad rehearsal means the performance will be great
12)It's good luck for someone to wish you "break a leg!" before the performance
13)start a performance 13 minutes late
14)Have a cat backstage (although if it runs on stage it means bad luck)
15)It's good luck to say "shit" or "merde" at least once during the performance
16)It's good luck to perform Cinderella
17)It's good luck for one actor to be hunchback
18)drink champagne on opening night
19)the same costume should be worn night after night when performances are a success.

Bad Luck superstitions:
1) It's bad luck to have a play open in a Friday
2) It's bad luck to open a play on the 13th of the month
3) It's bad luck to use yellow, green or blue on stage
4) If shoes are placed on a chair in the dressing room is bad luck
5) Having three candles on stage or in the dressing room is bad luck
6) It's bad luck to leave a piece of soap behind that you've been using on tour
7) It's bad luck to have real flowers on stage
8) Do not use real food, drink or jewelry on stage
9) Do not open an umbrella on stage
10) It is bad luck to use the words "Turkey"and "Bomb" in the play
11) it is bad luck to whistle at any time during the performance
12) it is bad luck to perform Macbeth or Robin Hood
13) It is bad lick to look over the shoulder of another actor while they apply makeup
14) Do not have pictures in the dressing room
15) People should not knit near the stage
16) It is bad luck to wear peacock feathers
17) Do not quote the last word of a forthcoming play before the performance.

    A nice list. Theater people are on par with athletes with superstition. Though you're a little off on the MacBeth thing. It's not bad luck to perform the play, it's bad luck to say the name of the play except where it appears as a scripted line. That's why actors refer to it as "the scottish play."

    Great article. As an entertainer for many years, I've heard of several of these that are listed. It's good luck to have a bad opening on Friday because that means that Saturday will be a smash hit.
