Good Chinese Food and Clean Chinese Restaurants Are Becoming Hard to Find in Portland, Oregon

Portlander's should probably consider going to Forest Grove for their Chinese cravings. In years past I would have referred lovers of Chinese food to Old Town Portland however, after viewing this video, KATU Dirty DiningI would not suggest any of the restaurants in Old Town Portland.

House of Louie located at 331 NW Davis, Portland 97209 - has scored a 44 by the Oregon Health Department as released in this video of October 27, 2010. After re-inspection they only hit 70. Reasons for the low scores were many but what caught my eye/ear was the 3 dead Mice, cockroaches and rodent feces in and around the restaurant. Mold on the cooler fans so deep that it was falling on the food in the cooler. Even though the House of Louie attempted to clean up the violations they did not score high enough to make them a 4 star restaurant by any means.

Along with this report two restaurants are mentioned and those are Fong Chong at 301 NW 4th Portland, received a 45 score and the Golden Horse Seafood in Old Town at 238 NW 4th, Portland received a 59.

The lowest score to pass is 70 and none of these three local restaurants have been able to reach above this score. Making them very low on my recommendation list for good Chinese food in Portland Oregon.

However, in Forest Grove the Mandarin China at 2338 Pacific Ave. Forest Grove 97116 reached a high 96 and the New Chinese Cuisine at 1931 Main St. Forest Grove, 97116 reached the top at 93.

Is the cleanliness of our local Chinese restaurants going down hill because of lack of funds, wait staff, or just the fact that the manager may be taking a nap in the closed off dining room, as was the case when KATU visited Old Towns House of Louie for an interview regarding the low health code scores that House of Louie obtained from the Health Department. It is obvious that some many restaurants have had a difficult time in the recent recession however; it is never a good idea for a restaurant to allow their cleanliness or health standards to fall below a passing grade since they can be shut down if the health violations continue.

I can totally relate to this...my area has lost all of its sit-down Chinese eateries save two, and only one of those are any good, and I'm friends with the owner of the good one. A pity, really, as good Chinese is some of the best food around!

The thought of eating in a dirty restaurant is nauseating. Glad you're creating awareness.

I remember when I lived in Hawaii we ate at a local joint frequently until one day I opened the tea pot to look inside and there was a roach in with the tea leaves...they offered us our meal for free, we never went back.

These restaurants sound terrible, especially the one where the three dead mice were found
