Good Family Movies

Erik Van Tongerloo
Many movies come to mind for the whole family to enjoy and the ones I have talked about are my favorites, as these have appeal to all ages and are good fun movies that are suitable for kids as well as adults.

LASSIE

This is a movie of a dog, a Rough collie, and called Lassie. The original movie "Lassie Come Home" is the story of a family that tries to survive in times of crises. It happens in Yorkshire where the writer of the book (Eric Knight) is born. The owner of the collie, Sam Carraclough, sells Lassie to a rich family but only because they are poor. Lassie is not happy in this family and misses the Caracloughs very much. He makes a dangerous tour for returning home to his original owners "the Caracloughs". It is a truly heartbreaking family movie that everyone likes.

THE LOVE BUG

The Love Bug is the story of a car, called Herbie, that comes to life. It's a great movie for kids because it lets their imaginations soar, and gives them a little bit of fun enjoyment that they can share with their parents. The car has a character, and it's great fun watching the character come to life.

THE PRINCES BRIDE

This is a real swashbuckler movie that gives adventure and fun for everyone, with sword fights and a lot of excitement.

THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE

I love this movie because it takes a child into another world of bad and good, where the snow queen offers a child reward and his greed really shows kids about the differences between the good and bad. The scenery is astounding and the movie a great one to enjoy with a bag of popcorn. I think the film also has a moral tale to tell in that it teaches children values without making it a chore. They walk through all the stages with the children in the story and can recognize wrong from right without it being taught to them in a way that makes kids cringe.

I particularly like the contrast between the other world and reality, and the characters that introduce themselves along the way.

THE MARCH OF THE EMPERORS

This is a great movie for adults and children as it takes you into wild life, and gives you a story of the lives of penguins and what they have to go through in order to survive. Its a realistic look, but it is filmed in such a way that you are pulled into the story and worry about the characters. The animation is super and kids and adults are enchanted by the film and the appeal that the penguins have. What's the best with this movie is that it combines nature study with entertainment and what kids can gain from it is an understanding of nature and want to learn more.

These are my lineup of films for the family, and my favorites.

A very good list of family entertainment. I loved the original "Love Bug" and of course I think every one can enjoy "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". I was introduced to the lovely seriies of books when my daughter was in grade 3. It was great when they based a movie on them.

Too bad they cast Lindsay Lohan in the last Herbie movie. She really screwed it up.
