Good Family Shows You Can Watch with Your Kids

It Depends on Age and Taste

Gary Davis
The nice thing about watching television with your children is that you are involved and you can have a large degree of control over what they watch. Of course what you watch and will enjoy watching varies greatly with age.

Today girls are every bit as involved in sports as boys. They are into softball, soccer and basketball. If your children are older considering the large number of cable coverage of sports you could opt to watch sports. This is really nice because you don't have to be intent and you can laugh and cheer while you are ingesting a pizza and cheering for your team. Those can be fun times.

Along those same lines our kids like American Idol. There are a number of aspects to the show that draws kids there.

It is fun to hate Simon Cowell. Paula Abdul is sweet. Some of the singers are so bad they make you laugh and some are so good they leave you in shock.

"The Simpsons" is a show that can be for most any age. They tend to get into problems that relate to the family and there are enough different personalities to cover everyone's tastes. They are on Fox.

Two shows that are about families are now in reruns but they were so popular that they are on all the time.

First "Married...with Children" follows the antics of the Bundy family. They have no class and yet they are able to get by. I think we see a little of our family (behind closed doors) in them. They can be seen on TBS.

"Everybody Loves Raymond" is about the Barone family and the way that they handle problems. Debra the wife is the stabilizing force but the concepts the writers come up with are hysterical and at times they take on poignant issues.

If your children are younger then "Hannah Montana" is a great show starring Miley Cyrus as is "Walt Disney Presents." While Disney has gone down in my estimation over the years, the company still stands head and shoulders above other children's programming. These shows can be seen on the Disney Channel.

Finally our family has always liked "Cops." It is interesting to see how the police handle different crimes and how violent criminals can be that way for no reason. Also it is nice to know we are battling crime.

As I've said many, many times in various articles it isn't important as to what you watch with your children as it is simply that you're willing to take the time to be with them. They'll never say anything but they are thankful.

I'm not sure who will ever read this article, but the advice of shows to watch are ridiculous. You recommend shows where the parents are a joke, and where the husbands/fathers are complete idiots. Don't we have enough examples of men who are inept in the world? How about some strong families with strong males taking care of their homes? Not many shows like that on TV any more. Rather than hang out and watch TV, how about doing something with your kids like teaching them a craft or a skill? What a waste of a great evening to watch Married with Children.
