You can be an angler or a fly fisherman. It does not matter; the biggest factor will be what you use to catch a particular type of fish. You can experiment with different flies or lures. There are seasoned fishermen who frequent this area; they often compare notes of different fishing techniques and equipment. Wooly buggers are popular for fly fishing but plain old worms have landed plenty with the anglers.
There is an easily accessible and nicely graded boat launch. Caution should be exercised with a motorboats or any other type of boat. The river is a constantly changing entity and there is the possibility of running over large dead trees with propellers. You probably won't notice the trees unless you are keeping a good eye out. No matter what type of water craft you choose, you should always note the current. It can be quite swift and strong, especially in the spring.
The river is stocked with salmon at Sewell's fall every spring by Trout Unlimited (www.merrimacktu.org). Another useful website is www.nhfishandgame, you can see exactly when it was stocked in addition to other helpful fishing information such as size requirements for fish you want to keep.
There are many different species in the river to be fished. The three most popular are trout, bass and salmon. It is a fisherman's delight to land a good size salmon. There are deeper pockets of water here, rapids, and vegetation at some edges, all good for different species of fishing.
At one time this area was just plain dumpy and disgusting. There was an old rotting car under the bridge and garbage strewn about. It is now picturesque, easily accessible, and has rest rooms available. All in all the whole area has been revamped with excellent results. You can find nice trails and even some sandy beaches if you walk a bit. Keep your eyes skyward and you may see the resident pair of eagles. There have also been occasional deer and moose spotted.
The pollution level has dropped drastically in the past couple of decades. Today, if you wish, you can ride a mountain bike to your desired destination along the river and fish or swim. You can take your best friend along too, dogs adore the place.
All you really need if you are a fisherman is faith, bait, lures or flies and a fishing pole. And don't forget a camera for when you get your personal trophy fish.
