Good Night, Soldier

Robert O. Adair
I remember World War II,
I remember a dumb, little eight year old kid
who went to sleep
after hearing Judy Canova
end her radio show with:
"Goodnight soldier,
wherever you may be!"
This dumb little kid wondered
where all this was going!
Would we be invaded?
I remember my brother in law
scrambling for his plane
at Pearl Harbor,
so filled with shrapnel
he spent the war in a military hospital.
I remember Doolittle's raid on Tokyo,
guys reaching out of troop train windows
to kiss their sweethearts goodbye,
raising the flag on Iwo Jima,
the crowd in Times Square
when victory came!
Thank you!
All you who served
our country:
on land,
on the sea
and in the air,
Thank you!

I wrote this for a veteran who said he had never been thanked for serving in the war. So I contacted him by phone and read it to him. He liked it so much, he asked me to send him a copy, which I did.

It is good to remember. I could read a ream of these. That would help those of us whose Father served in war know them a little better.
I enjoyed and appreciated this. Thank you!

what a wonderful tribute! I'm sorry I missed this when you first wrote it. You should feature it on your profile page for Veteran's day. I wonder who that "dumb kid was". God bless. Michael
