Good Work Principles to Teach Summer Job Teen Workers
Some of the Essential Characteristics of Success on the Job for Teens to Know
Respect is one of those characteristics. While in the class room environment at school, some teens will have learnt some of this. But on the job in the real world it is extremely essential. In America, for example, with the diversity in race, religion, sex orientation, culture and the like, teens on summer work will need to learn to interact and show respect for all people base on the above points. Respect is crucial for any form of work improvement or development. Respect shown among fellow teens and teachers is not the same in this case. It may be similar, but takes into account a compulsory and mature requirement that requires the person to discard personal feelings and prejudices, and to focus on the organization and their requirement as a worker.
Cooperation (and in effect courtesy) is also important. To get along with others in a harmonious way is very necessary for any to survive on the job. People normally do not work alone, they have to talk to and work well with others in the interest of the organization. So the need to teach and show how cooperation works to summer workers so they can show it to others while on the job is important. How this will be done will depend on the person to be taught and the environment in which they work. Besides, cooperation brings new friends and social contacts with others who may very well help a teen in later job needs.
Honesty is extremely important for all to know and demonstrate on the job. No employer or co-worker normally likes a thief or liar. People who work together will have personal and family belongings with them that they do not wish to be stolen and then lied to about them. Employers do not want someone who will pass-on dishonest communications or news about themselves and the organizations to others to the detriment of others and the firm. Here we are not necessarily talking about a person needing to learn, through teaching on the job, how to be a pure or religiously honest person. The crucial point is the realistic need to teach teens who are not be familiar with the crucial nature of how much integrity is valued on the job, so they will learn and know the benefits of being sincerely honest.
Punctuality is another important characteristic. Some teens coming from high the school environment, may not yet realize that being punctual on the job essential means you will have a job. They need to be taught and learn that if you are consistently late, you will not have a job - and that is a fact of the adult work life. Punctuality is closely related to reliability but someone cannot be relied on if he/she is not punctual. Time is money as many will say. And being consistently late or absent on the job means that employers are not getting value for their money from the worker. Hence, the employer will have to unfortunately dismiss that worker. This point is a crucial factor that all employers rake into account when hiring and keeping a person. Even if the worker has the technical abilities and other factors are in his/her favor, if he/she is not punctual, then the employer will not benefit form hiring or keeping that person.
Teens this summer need to know that a summer job can help shape the way for a future career with the same employers or in the same industry/occupation. Hence, this is where the need to teach them to enhance their potential through additional training or college further education comes in. Right counseling according the identified job competence then becomes necessary. Sometimes a teen will take a summer job just for the need to earn some money, but show good ability to do the job as a career. Further training then becomes necessary and this is where coworkers can help to promote a teen ability through good advice and support mechanisms.
These are just some of the essential principles that teens will need to know, learn and show on the job as they embark on summer work. They are all important and work collectively for the benefit of the employer and teen alike. An essential point is to know that these same principles are also relevant to adults on the job for a successful career and steady employment.
