Goodyear Arizona Provides New Free Program for Seniors

"You Are Not Alone" or "YANA" Will Provide Seniors with a Sense of Security

Lori Franks
The City of Goodyear, Arizona cares about its elderly population and has proven it by the new free program being offered by the volunteers of the Goodyear Police Department. The program called, "You Are Not Alone" or "YANA", will provide a sense of security and comfort to the elderly individual who lives alone.

The elderly individual who wants to enjoy the independence of living alone will surely benefit from the You Are Not Alone Program. Many times when an elderly person has no friends or family living near by or no one available to check on them, it can lead to fear and a lack of peace of mind. What this new free program hopes to promote is a sense of reassurance that there is someone who cares and is on hand to help.

Goodyear Police Departments Volunteer's in Police Services or "VIPS", plan to provide weekly phone calls and home visits to seniors who enroll in the YANA Program. These weekly contacts will ensure the elderly that they are not alone, that there are people who care and will on a continuous basis provide visitation and help in every way possible. If during a visit an emergency is discovered the volunteers will contact a dispatcher who will send a police officer as quickly as possible. There is also a resource center with information on finding certain services or help for seniors who have limited community contact, just a phone call away.

The program will be in full swing by September 27, 2010 and a registration form must be completed and turned in to participate. Registration forms are available online at this link;

The forms can also be requested from the Goodyear Police Department.

Community volunteers, including myself and my daughter, are also planning to canvas 10 different Goodyear neighborhoods in the coming weeks to place door hangers with a brief overview of the new program. The goal of this local community outreach is to try to make sure that everyone will be informed about this new beneficial program to the elderly of Goodyear, AZ.

The VIPS group is also hosting a kickoff reception for YANA on September 22, 2010 at the Goodyear City Hall, from 2:00pm until 5:00 pm in room 117. The VIPS are always looking for new volunteers and there are many other programs to get involved in. Check out their webpage to see if there may be an area you could donate your time and energy to such as; citizens patrol, event support, fingerprinting and much more.
