Google struck a $12.5 billion dollar deal Monday to buy Motorola Mobility. This deal is set to be reviewed by the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department, but in the meantime the world of technology is abuzz with the possibilities of this big move.
* Google has traditionally stayed away from hardware, focusing instead on search engine and online advertising.
* Google has approximately $39 billion in cash and an unknown net worth, according to Forbes.
* Google was first incorporated Sept. 4, 1998, as a privately held company. The first public offering was in 2004.
* Google's early goal was "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."
* Motorola can trace its roots to the 1928 founding of Galvin Manufacturing Corp. Renamed Motorola, the company initially made two-way radios in World War II and early television sets.
* Motorola developed a handset in 1973, helping to lay the foundation for the mobile phone industry.
* Motorola Mobility division primarily produces smartphones, such as the Motorola Droid and the Defy. It also produces tablet computers and digital set-top boxes.
* Motorola Mobility was formerly known as the Mobile Devices division of Motorola; its name changed in January 2011.
* Motorola reported a $52 million loss last quarter.
* Motorola is the first mobile maker to partner with Google.
* This $40-a-share deal created a 63 percent premium from Friday's Motorola Mobility's closing price on the New York Stock Exchange.
* Google is set to directly challenge Apple with this acquisition. Up to this point, Apple has led the way in the smartphone and tablet markets.
* Google is also lining up to compete against Nokia with this move. Microsoft and Nokia recently struck a deal to help rebuild the Finnish phone company.
* Samsung and HTC will be free to continue to release phones with Google's Android software. Motorola Mobility will be run as a separate business for Google.
* Motorola Mobility holds approximately 17,000 patents. Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility gives the company a strong hold in this department.
* The deal is subject to US regulatory approval.
* Google's Android division is currently undergoing anti-trust investigations and fighting lawsuits from Apple and Microsoft over alleged patent infringements related to the Android.
* Google and Motorola expect the completion of the takeover to be completed by late 2011 or early 2012.
