Google Buys Doubleclick

Is Anything Safe?

Russell Boone
Web giant Google has purchased another company, causing consumers to ask the question, is anything safe from Googleship? Google recently acquired Doubleclick, the largest placer of banner ads on the internet, for $3.1 Million. This adds yet another internet company to Googles web of omniscience.

The Doubleclick deal is the most recent in a series of buy outs from the massive company, leading internet users to believe that they are trying to take over the internet. With additions such as Deja News, You Tube, Applied Semantics, Blogger, Picasa, Keyhole, Zipdash and Buzznet it is apparent that Google is a hungry creature who is gorging itself on internet companies. So, whats behind their appetite? Money.

Google has been buying up nearly every small internet business it can get its hands on, and their growth is apparent. With new features such as Google Maps growing constantly, and Adsense raking in piles of cash, whats left for the power hungry company but abstract growth. Google has been working hard to corner the information market, and they are doing a darn good job of it too. Their acquisitions have set them as the standard of internet information retrieval. Now they have their sights set outside of that market. The new Google Mobile feature allows users to make a 411-esque phone call to the Google system and get information such as local businesses locations. They also have a similar text messaging option. This is proof of their desire to grow outside of the internet, but these programs are expensive.

The acquisition of Doubleclick will lend millions of dollars into Googles bank account, by combining with their adsense program. Look around the web, the majority of websites use Googles adsense program for ad revenue. What most users don't realize is that every ad click they get paid for, so does Google. Its a 1 for them, 2 for us deal. With Doubleclicks ad power integrated with Adsense, Google stands to make more then ever from ads.

More money for Google means more avenues they can spider their way down. It is my belief that Google is building them selves up for something big. Their biggest competitor is Microsoft, and thats where Google is headed. By establishing themselves as a leader on the internet, they build name recognition and loyalty which extends outside of the net. Google is going to release an operating system, and its not that far off. Think about it. Who else does Google fear? Yahoo? They are stuck on the net. The only company that can rival Google is Microsoft, and that is exactly who Google is going to attack. By building themselves up in an unrelated market, but a powerful one, they have put themselves in a place to hit Microsoft hard, and hard enough that they could rattle the foundation. I know personally, I would love to test drive a Google OS, their web systems have never failed me, I would buy it on name alone, and thats exactly what Google wants.
