Google Changes Name of Business

April Fools!

Michelle Foster
Google, headed by pranksters Larry Paige and Sergey Brin, have caused mix-ups on numerous occasions by changing the view of the home-page on their search engine, which today, April 1, 2010-April Fool's day-reads, "Topeka." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/01/topeka-google-april-fools_n_521283.html [You can see what the page looked like here since it will probably be back to normal by the time you read this article].

The idea was inspired by the Mayor of Topeka himself, when last month he shocked the world by announcing that in honor of the multi-billion dollar business (And in hopes of improving the city's bid to have Google choose Topeka to open an arm of their company) that the capital city of Kansas would be changing its name for the month of March, to Google, Kansas.

Google decided to return the favor by changing the search engine page from the primary colored 'Google,' to the word, "Topeka," using the same primary colors that everyone has come to associate with the site.

Google does this from time to time, which has confused people in the past. They have added characters for Halloween making the letters ghoulish, but the search engine works as well as it always does, all the same.

The company has no intentions of permanently changing the name or the home page (As of yet)-but don't be surprised when, in the future, you log on to perform a search, and there is an odd picture, phrase, or even name on the page-it is all just par-for-course in the CEO's since of humor.

Fortunately for investors, the proverbial cat got out of the bag, people were informed, and no harm was done to the trading as a result of this April Fool's Day prank. It did kind of wreck the fun though-because only people who hadn't heard about the joke were able to appreciate the shock of, "What the?!!" When they signed on to see the fictitious logo. Maybe next year, next holiday, or on some other occasion they will catch us off-guard and be able to actually pull it off.

What will the next joke be? Only Sergey Brin and Larry Paige know that (And they probably haven't decided yet either), but whatever it is, it's sure to be a good one.

One thing is for certain, whatever we sign on and see on the search engine page that the world has come to be so reliant on, as long as the engine performs the way it does, we will use Google, Ghoulgle, Topeka-or whatever else they wish to call it for that day.
