Google Chrome: Working with Mozilla Firefox Bookmarks

Let's say you have been using Mozilla Firefox for some time now, but have given Google Chrome a try and like it. So you now want to use it as your default browser and would like to pull over your Bookmarks from Mozilla Firefox. There are two ways of doing this. The easy method using Google Chrome only, whereas the other method requires exporting from Mozilla Firefox in HTML format and importing through Google Chrome.

Method 1: Importing Firefox Bookmarks Inside Chrome

With Google Chrome open, Click the wrench (far right icon on the same line as the address bar). This will drop down a list of item. Choose Options (fourth from the bottom). In the Google Chrome Options window, click the Personal Stuff tab. Near the bottom of the page you should see a section titled "Browsing Data". Click Import data from another browser... Select Firefox from the top drop down menu. I have left all of the items listed under "Select items to import" selected. Click Import. Provided Firefox was not open, the import should have completed. If you have Mozilla Firefox open during this process, you will see a message that Mozilla Firefox is open. Close Mozilla Firefox and click Continue. Click Close.

Method 2: Exporting From Firefox and Importing in Chrome

This method is most useful if transferring bookmarks across accounts or across computers. Inside Firefox, from the Bookmarks menu, select Organize Bookmarks... This will open the Bookmark Library. In the left hand top corner you will see Organize, Views and Import and Backup. Click Import and Backup and select Export HTML... Navigate to where you want the backup saved and click Save.

Note: If you are transferring across accounts or computers, it might be ideal to save this directly to a removable drive such as a USB thumb drive.

Now close Firefox and open Chrome. Click the wrench (far right icon on the same like as the address bar) and select Bookmark Manager. In the left hand top corner you will see Organize, Tools and Synchronize My Bookmarks. Click Tools and select Import Bookmarks... Navigate to where you saved the backup and click Open.

Where did your bookmarks go?

The newly imported bookmarks are available on your bookmark toolbar at the far right labeled Other Bookmarks. Click Other Bookmarks and you will see an Imported From Firefox (or simply Imported using method 2) appears with your bookmarks inside that folder.

Working with your imported bookmarks

The default setup of placing your imported bookmarks might not be the way you want them. Let's work on that. Click the wrench (far right icon on the same line as the address bar) and select Bookmark Manager. Click the little arrow in front of "Other Bookmarks". Click Imported From Firefox or Imported (method 2). In the right pane will be all of your imported bookmarks and folders.

Let's say you want to work with the bookmarks under Bookmarks Toolbar. Double click Bookmarks Toolbar. This will show the items under Bookmarks Toolbar. I clicked the first item on my list, and holding down the shift key, I scrolled to the bottom of my list and clicked the bottom item. This will select all items. I wanted these items under Google Chrome's Bookmarks Bar folder, so I drag the selected items over to Bookmarks Bar in the left pane. Now they are all in that folder.

You can delete the Bookmarks Toolbar by first clicking Imported from Firefox in the left pane. Now locate Bookmarks Toolbar in the right back. Right click on it and select delete.
