Google Nexus is Not the Phone of Tomorrow!

Theresa L.
At one time Google was a simple search engine, no different than Yahoo. Today it is one of the most popular search engines around. Not only is Google one of the most popular but a couple of years ago it took a giant leap when it merged into the cellphone business. Almost every smartphone allows for Google access but all of that changed when Google took one more giant leap into the cellphone industry.

Google announced the Google Nexus One. Unlike working with other cellphones the Nexus One is owned by Google and can only be purchased online at google.com/phone, which is a huge downfall for anyone searching for a new cellphone. However, on the plus side the Nexus One can currently be picked up without a carrier and also sports the newest version of Android.

So what makes the Google Nexus One so much better or worse than other smartphones currently one the market? There are a few things that sets the Google Nexus One out from other smartphones and not all of them are very good.

One of the first things that sets the Google Nexus One out is the shape of the phone. There is no other phone on the market that has the curves Google has. According to the Christian Science Monitor the Nexus One is considered to be between the iPhone and Palm Pre with a surface display of 3.7 inches giving it a trimmer and lighter feel to it than other smartphones with the thinnest smartphone on the market and according to David Pogue of the New York Times it is "so thin and rounded, it feels terrific in your hand."

Another thing that makes the Google Nexus One stand out is the hardware. Housing four touch buttons for back, menu, home, and search on the bottom of the screen as well as a trackball pointing device it makes the Nexus One feel like a mini laptop. Not only does it offer funtion buttons but the Nexus One comes with physical and volume controls but none of that compares to the 480x800 OLED touchscreen that blows even the iPhone away with their 480x320 touchscreen.

A downfall of the Google Nexus One is the Android 2.1, the newest version of Android. One would assume having the newest version of Android would make the Google Nexus One even better but compared to the iPhone it is lacking. One of the biggest problems a user will find is using non-google programs according to the Christian Science Monitor. Unlike other smartphones Google OWNS Google and does not integrate other applications. This causes a lot of delays unlike the iPhone which is smooth and easy to use. David Pogue also notes that the phone comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as a removable battery and camera and according to Pogue the pictures are "roughly on par with the iPhone's".

Another downfall of the Google Nexus One is the applications. This one is probably not a huge thing but it is one many smartphone users take for granted and that is the Google Store is much smaller than other iPhones. David Pogue stats facts when he says Google Nexus only offers 18,000 games while their are currently over 100,000 for the iPhone. Another problem is the memory card for the Nexus One is only 32 gigabytes and with a 4 gigabyte card the Nexus One allots only 190 megabytes for downloading and storage which is noted by the Christian Science Monitor. Pogue also make notes that the Google Nexus One does not come with a keyboard nor does it offer iTunes, and the Nexus One also lacks in a physical on-off switch.

Finally even if you bought the Google Nexus One how would you use it? Currently T-Mobile is the only company on the market that is ready to suppor the Google Nexus One. With that said even if you are interested in the Google Nexus One the lack of companies that currently support it is a huge downfall but one that could change as the weeks goes by and according to the New York Times the Nexus One is "An excellent app phone, fast and powerful but marred by some glitches and missing features - a worthy competitor to the Droid, if not the iPhone."
