Google+ Now Offering Games Just like Those on Facebook

Donald Pennington

The bosses at Google have seen Facebook as one of the biggest threats to ever come along, and they're not about to let Zuckerberg have a niche they can't touch. That niche of which we speak? Why, games, of course!

According to the release on The Wall Street Journal online, Google+ is going to give Facebook a run for their money, and offer the developers of games a bigger piece of the pie of all revenue generated.

Sure, Facebook and MySpace opened up the online world to Grandma with games like Farmville and Mafia Wars, but that doesn't keep the Google gang from horning in on the action. Some might call offering a lower rate for those juicy bits of data cut-throat on the part of Google+. Others just call it free market competition. Just like any other business on Earth, Facebook must get better, or get beaten.

Among the games being offered by the search giant users will find Angry Birds and Zynga Poker, so far. But with Google offering developers the chance to keep 95% of all revenue generated (compared to Facebook letting them keep a mere 70%), other app and game developers are bound to come along for the ride - and fast. Nimbleness, soul, and passion, indeed. Well played.

Disney's Playdom, and EA Games are already in on it, too. Who can blame them, after all? It's nothing personal Facebook. It's just business. The biggest down-side of this new development will be for the users themselves. There's not one of us on "The Social Network" who doesn't find all of those app invites just a little bit annoying after the thousandth in any given day.

Just how exactly will team Facebook compete with such a big competitor low-balling them on price? Will the Zuck try to go even lower than Schmidt/Page on price for user data? Maybe Mark will try to keep users playing on his site with a superior experience for members. Whichever approach he takes, one thing is for sure, Competition is always good for the consumer.

Wait a minute, I thought we were boycotting Google!

You're darn straight, Jeanne. I dropped Vampire Wars, Cityville, and the others, too. I might still play a hand or two of poker, but that's it. My productivity tripled.

I honestly had to stop completely playing games on Facebook . People will soon wake up to this time wasting activity that is robbing them of their lives.

That's a good point Allana. Now, imagine you're the developer wanting to debut new games, and you have the chance to make 70% or 95%. Some new games will never even end up on Fb.

Well, since the profit margin doesn't necessarily affect the user (unless the developer passes the extra profit on as savings for the user) most users are going to be blissfully unaware of the difference and probably continue to play as they always have, which means staying on FB games. Only if the developer completely MOVES to Google+ will the FB users suddenly wonder what's going on, and possibly move with the games.

It sounds like fun is bound to be found.
