Over the weekend, Google's homepage allowed the playing of popular retro video game Pac-Man right on their homepage. The search engine giant are famous for their regular changes to their homepage logo, changing it for various holidays and other relevant happenings.

May 22nd, 2010 marked the 30-year anniversary of Pac-Man. The game, which was created by NAMCO and licensed in the US by Midway, has been a perennial favorite of gamers since its 1980 release. "Pac-Mania" swept the world in the early '80s, leading to the beloved sequel, Ms. Pac-Man.

Tons of Pac-Man merchandise was released, from T-shirts to toys, as fads often do. Both the original Mr. Pac and his lovely wife would be featured in board games by Milton Bradley, and an animated series based on the character also aired in the early 1980s. Perhaps oddest of all was the track "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner & Garcia, which made it into the Billboard Top 10 in 1981. This isn't the only example of unusual songs that made it big in the '80s, but is definitely a fitting tribute to the 20th century's wackiest decade.

This past weekend proved to Google that Pac Man Fever is still alive and well. Due to the popularity of the Pac-Man homepage featured to commemorate the game's 30th anniversary, they've decided to make Pac-Man available online for free permanently. NAMCO has given their go-ahead, so simply typing Google.com/Pacman will allow you to play the classic game anytime. Simply press "Insert Coin" to play Pac-Man on single player, or double-click the button for a 2 player mode featuring Ms. Pac-Man.

It's cool that Namco is allowing this to stay up. i wonder if the kill screen glitch works in this version. i assume they just emulated the arcade game, instead of rebuilding the thing in flash.

Goodness... I seen it, but I didn't know you could actually play it. I just checked, and it's gone now. :(

I played it all weekend. I couldn't stop. I was like an addict. Each time that I went to do a search I tried to resist playing, but I couldn't control myself. It brought back so many memories.
