Google in Place of a Girlfriend?

A recent poll released by Zogby International has revealed that almost 1 in 4 Americans believe that the Internet can serve as a substitute for a significant other, which isn't really too hard to believe when you think about just how much the internet offers.

It may not be able to cook for you or go to the movies with you, but with a few clicks of a mouse, you can learn to cook whatever you like or download any movie you would like too see. It never asks you if it looks fat or if its best friend is prettier. You can spend hour after hour on the internet and it never gets boring. It doesn't have a problem with your friends, and even helps you keep in touch with them.

Americans definitely depend on it like they do a significant other. You can ask the internet any question that you can possibly think of, and it has the answer. It provides companionship through chat rooms, blogs, forums, and websites like Myspace. It's like having millions of people to keep you company. Through webcams and digital cameras, you can see who you are chatting to, and if someone annoys you, it's easier to make up an excuse to quit chatting with them. It's always entertaining and full of fun things to do. It doesn't share your interests, but it can satisfy all of them, whether its movies, books, music, travel, etc.

In many ways, having the internet is much better than having a nagging girlfriend or wife. I guess as long as you're okay with, ahem, "self-gratification", if you know what I mean,(the internet can help with that, too, but I'm not going down that road), and not having someone to snuggle up with at night, then why go through the trouble of trying to find "the one"? I guess you could say it's instinctual to desire a physical partner, but we've somewhat altered nature already with trying to go from being a polygamous species to a monogamous species, so I guess it's possible we could become dependent on technology for companionship. To coin a new term, we will be "technologious".
