In January 2010, Google had started to consider switching the operating system used internally in their company, indicating that Windows will no longer be used within Google. Google's decision to stop using Windows is purely out of security reasons. Many Google employees have said that they are inclined to use Linux, which is very energy efficient. On the other hand, they frowned upon the energy inefficiency of Microsoft's Window's operating system.
In the beginning of 2010, new employees of Google could choose to use Windows operating system on their personal laptop. On the other hand, Google banned the usage of Windows on desktops for their new employees. However, new employees could only choose between Apple's Mac or Linux's operating system today, showing that Google had decided to completely dump Microsoft's Windows. Many employees, old and new, have already switched from Windows to Mac OS operating system in Google.
Windows operating system is known to be vulnerable to hackers' attacks. Similarly, compared to other operating systems, Windows is also more prone to computer viruses. Today, in Google, employees who want to use Windows must obtain approval from Google's management and Chief Information Officer. Also, Google employees pay more attention to a variety of security problems right now. After the hackers' attacks, many of them have chosen to use Apple's Mac OS due to security reasons.
In addition, some people have said that Google's decision to stop using Windows is also tied to Google's introduction of its own operating system. The brand new Chrome OS operating system will soon enter the market and face a fierce competition from Microsoft's Windows. Google hopes to be able to finally use its own Chrome operating system to execute its tasks and operations. Nonetheless, this is also a security reason. Because the safest thing for a technology company to do is to run its operations through its own products.
Google's decision to stop using Windows makes some of its employees disgruntled, as expected. Google's employees hope to be able to choose their own operating system freely, and this is also the case in most big companies. Of course many employees also approve this move because they are still able to use Apple or Linux's operating systems.
Google and Microsoft have been involved in ferocious competitions in many different areas, including search engines, emails and operating systems. Even though Google has a huge edge in the area of search engines, Microsoft's Windows has been the world's most popular operating system for years, as more than 80% market share of operating systems is Microsoft's. Nonetheless, the competition between these two technology giants will only get more fierce for years to come.
