Google Veterans Day Controversy: American Flag, Islamic Crescent Moon Doodle Sparks Internet Outrage
In the past Google personified its doodle with red, white and blue letters but the addition of an Islamic crescent moon-looking "e" has all the Internet abuzz.
Tweets via Twitter have included a broad range of hostile opinions about 'Old Glory' appearing with the shadow of a stylized Islamic crescent moon--especially on Veterans Day. The Google doodle is definitely stirring up fears of fanning the flames of anti-Islamic sentiments in America. Was that what Google intended?
Reactions on Twitter have ranged from shock to disappointment at Google's choice of doodle designs for Veterans Day.
LaughTech on Twitter enlarged the logo and set its caption as "Google says, 'Happy Veterans Day, Islam'".
AdrianTweeting makes a similar observation: "The Veterans Day Google logo kind of makes the "e" on the end look like a sinister Islamic crescent lurking behind the flag. Unfortunate."
RL from Product-Reviews.net sums up the outrage perfectly, "An American flag covering a partial showing Islamic crescent moon...good job GOOGLE...way to do your part to further fan the flames of tension between the western world and the Islamic community. Lets see how you play dumb and spin this."
Exactly. Way to go, Google. Give crazies such as Pamela Geller, Terry Jones and Tea Party patriots the fuel they need to wage an all-out slugfest of vitriol against Islam for ruining an American tradition. The Google doodle is distasteful at best, hateful at worst, for this Veterans Day.
Your Google doodle is supposed to enlighten and educate those who click on it, not cause a rift between two world powers.
In a civilized society we need to show respect. We show respect by opening the door for the elderly. We show respect by thanking a soldier for fighting for us. We show respect by saluting the flag when in uniform. We show respect by not desecrating someone's sacred symbol.
Would Pamela Geller want Christians to build a church on the Wailing Wall? Would Terry Jones advocate atheists burning the Holy Bible? I don't think so. Respect works both ways. We cannot earn by respect by acting disrespectful.
Google's Veterans Day doodle needs to show the flag, and any possible representations of it, respectfully. In times of peace, flags of all countries fly at the same level. The same should be true of American and Islamic ideals. There is no reason why they two can peacefully coexist. We don't live in Salem, Massachusettts in the 1650s. No more witch hunts.
I'm disappointed in Google's doodle for this Veterans Day. Our president just left the world's largest Islamic country when he visited Indonesia. He treated Islam with respect. Is this doodle the way we show the world we are civilized and respectful? No wonder Islamic extremists hate us.

Really? Don't these idiots have record albums to scratch up looking for hidden messages or something?
The loonier members of the right assume out of hand that Google must be an enemy because:
A) It is a Bay Area Yuppie industry and
B) Is not in the business of constantly putting on ostentatious displays of agreement with and fealty to the right-wing agenda.
And so the nutcases, in their typical fashion, are simply squinting their eyes as hard as they need to in order to find evidence for what they already 'know'.
I mean honestly, I just don't get it. This article can't be serious, surely?
"We show respect by not desecrating someone's sacred symbol."
I don't quite understand your point here. Even if it was an Islamic crescent behind the flag (though I can't fathom how paranoid you'd have to be to see that without someone telling you it's there), could someone explain exactly which sacred symbol is being desecrated here?
The stupid, it burns.
You Americans are really trying hard to lose whatever little bit of remaining credibility or respect the rest of the world has for you, aren't you? You're doing a stellar job. Ignorance & racism is not something to be proud of but some don't seem to care. This "controversy" is ridiculous. How about you worry about issues that DO matter? Sheesh. Unbelievable.
Monsieur es fou.
Also, when I saw the logo, I merely thought it was an obscured 'e'. That people thought of it as a crescent points to their over-sensitivity to Islamic objects (and overt obsession with their version of political correctness) rather than what Google has done.
And I come from a Muslim country!
