'Goonies': How Mikey, Chunk, Data, and Mouth Made Me Fall in Love with Cinema

Every huge movie buff has at least one movie that helped start his or her addiction to movies. For me, there are many of these movies, but the first one that set in place my love for cinema was "Goonies."

Hey you Guys!

"Goonies" might seem like an odd choice to some people.

It wasn't an incredible drama that made you feel the pain and sorrows of each character so much that you went through a box of Kleenex. What?! No, I wasn't crying. I just had something in my eye. C'mon baby, you know guys don't cry.

Nor was it a movie that would make you laugh so hard that you soiled your pants. My pants are wet? Are you sure? That just must be...Oh, you know what? I think I spilled some of my pop in my lap. Yeah, that's it.

It wasn't a scary movie either. Sorry Steven Spielberg, the Fratellos didn't exactly give me nightmares. Night light? That's not a night light. I mean it's a light, and I keep it on at night. But it's not like I need it to sleep. It's there entirely for when I sleep walk.

One-Eyed Willie's Rich Stuff

I honestly can't remember the first time I ever saw "Goonies." What I can tell you is that I've seen it at least 50 times. I have even watched it two times in a row. Steven Spielberg's classic adventure movie brought everything to the screen that I love in movies and wrapped it all in one big story.

The characters were all different and each had their own appeal that made you love them. Mikey was the non-stop dreamer that made me want to never stop using my imagination. Chunk was the storyteller that made me always want my stories to take on a life of their own, and to stretch the truth until it was dramatic and as interesting as possible. Data was the inventor that made me want to never stop searching for possible answers. Mouth was the smart aleck that I have accidently been all of my life, but what can I say; nothing makes me feel better than getting somebody to laugh. Andy, well, she didn't make me want to be a hot chick, which is a good thing since I'm a guy. She did however pull off giving me the false belief that even a dork like Brand can pull in the best looking females. I still like to believe in this, so don't try bursting my bubble.

It's the Fratellis

Without bad guys, the good guys would just be plain guys. I like to dislike Troy just as much as the next guy. He is a jerk for that very reason. We are supposed to hate him, but if he was the real bad guy in "Goonies," then the movie would be lame. Since the pirates are all dead in this story, thieves that kill are the next best things. The Fratellis aren't just bad guys that I and you cheer against, though. They are somehow lovable in an, "Oh my gosh, they are idiotic and dysfunctional kind of way."

Goonies Never Say Die

"Goonies" is a movie that has never grown stale to me. It still draws me in and makes me want to relive the adventures of my youth. Storytelling is about making the audience live through the characters. That is how "Goonies" has helped shaped my love for movies. I still like to take a break from reality and put myself in their shoes. Treasure and adventure await.
