GOP Stands for the Grand Obstructionist Party

Jim Stillman
Many commentators have written or remarked that the Republican Party had decided not to introduce or offer alternative programs to those of the Democrats or the Obama Administration. It intends to expend all of its time, money and energy on repudiating the Administration initiatives. And, as Rush Limbaugh cheerfully proclaims, hope that Barack Obama fails - even if that failure hurts the country and its citizens.

This week that position (or lack thereof) became obvious. In a confidential 26-page memo, Dr. Frank Luntz, a top Republican consultant on the language of politics, is warning the GOP that the American people want health-care reform and that lawmakers need to try to avoid directly opposing President Barack Obama. Dr. Luntz' memo on language is well written and makes many points that would serve the GOP; its direct purpose is telling. The memo addresses, specifically, language and purposes and consequences of the Bill introduced by the Democrats.

So what's wrong with that?

There is no such Bill!

And when one is drafted, they're against the wording., whatever it is!

Luntz writes acknowledging that the healthcare system is, at least perceived by the public in a crisis mode:

Acknowledge the "crisis" or suffer the consequences. If you say there is no healthcare crisis, you give your listener permission to ignore everything else you say. It is a credibility killer for most Americans. A better approach is to define the crisis in your terms. "If you're one of the millions who can't afford healthcare, it is a crisis.

I would suggest that the GOP had two alternatives. First, the Republicans could take the initiative and introduce a Bill that would address the acknowledged problems and issues. Second, at the very least, hold back the nitpicking and critism until there is something to criticize.

Now it is clear that the GOP has no ideas and no proposals.

Except, perhaps to cut taxes to the wealthy.

Right on, Jim...the Repubs are stuck in a glue that they can't seem to undertand just doesn't work for them anymore. I must add I am saddened that it ever did, but alas, those days seem to be done..

Strange, just today (a week after the article was published) got a not of its publication. Oh, well, this one is good enough to read a second time - as all your articles are.

Sorry there Jim, not even close. Republicans offered numerous alternatives that were rejected out of hand because Democrats have such huge majorities they need no assistance from Republicans. So the Congressional Dems say "We want "X"" and Republicans have no choice but to accept it. So if we refuse to sign on to things we disagree with, and since the Dems can pass them without any Republican voting for it, what do you want from us? You Sir are using a most unfortunate political reality, one party rule, to destroy and defame us. Why do you care? You're a Dem. Don't you want to keep winning the elections? And since I know the answer to that already, should we Reps. take advice from those who want us to fail? Ya know, like DEMOCRATS????

Thanks for this report. You really show how absolutely lacking in substance the GOP (great interpretation) really is.

The problem now is that the former Orlando Govenor namely Judd Bush has been meeting with the Republicans, and like his brother, is edging them on. They are only looking bad, because the people voted for Obama, and are going to back him no matter what. The Republicans and the ex Vice President are stirring up a Hornets nest. Thanks for sharing this, I thought I was done with the bad politics and of the Bush family
