Gorgeous Angel Costume for Babies

For a Lifetime of Adorable Memories

Elle Bradcliff
It was my daughter's first Halloween and I didn't have much money to spend. I wanted her costume to be special and give me memories that would last forever, so I decided to make her a costume myself. I wanted to it to be cute rather than scary, so I picked an angel to represent her sweet personality.

I had three goals-the costume had to be safe, comfortable, and stay on easily. We were going to be walking around the neighborhood and then going to a party, so I wanted her to be able to enjoy it without constantly adjusting it. .

I started with one of her old white long sleeved onesies. I selected one that had embroidered roses on the neckline but that isn't necessary-plain white is fine. Just make sure it's the right weight for the weather your region is expecting by Halloween. Our area is slightly chilly, so I opted for a long sleeve style.

The next step is the white tutu. You can either purchase one from the hundreds of moms who make them as a side business or just get some tulle from a craft supply store. They are very easy to make. My method was to take a piece twice as long as the length I wanted for the skirt and fold it in half. The fold will be at the waistline. I then folded it lengthwise just at the waistline to give a little but more thickness & coverage for the skirt.

When I had 4 piece folded neatly & pinned about an 1" apart, I sewed them together to create the waist band. I continued until it was wide enough to fit around her comfortably with a little bit of extra. I did not include an elastic waist as I did not expect to use it again. You can make it any length you want. I opted for long as my daughter wasn't walking at the time and I thought it would be cuter.

I then basted the tutu directly onto the onesie. Don't sew it tightly or it will impede the stretch of the fabric and it may be hard to get on. I didn't want her to be able to get the tutu off and didn't want to spend the whole night readjusting it.

I used a stretchy white feather headband for the halo & purchased tiny angel wings with real feathers on eBay. You absolutely don't have to do that. Any white or gold headband will do. For the wings, you can use light cardboard and paint it white or gold depending on what color scheme you prefer. I suggest using elastic to loop over the arms for the most comfort and inaccessibility for the baby.

I also sewed tiny satin rosettes along the waist, but again thats just an extra. Most people won't even notice small details like that, so its totally up to you!

I was very happy with the way it turned out. She seemed to enjoy her time in it and I got lots of nice comments about how cute it was.
