Got the New 'Green' Milk Jug?

Go Square and Save

The new milk jug is more than just an odd shape. It's a pain to pour, some say. In fact, there have been numerous complaints that these new milk jugs are not worth the 20-cent per gallon savings. I beg to differ. I can handle a little drip of milk on my counter to save money on a milk gallon. Next to buying a gallon of gas, milk was the second highest rip-off of the summer, so if these big companies can find a way to make it cheaper I am all for that.

The New York Times reports that the new "green" milk jug is cheaper to consumers because it cost less to store and ship. The square jug is easier to store because the factories no longer need crates to stack large quantities; they simply stack the jugs on top of each other. In addition to saving space, the new square milk jugs can be shipped without crates and cumbersome cardboard packaging. Procession plants no longer thousands of crates to clean and maneuver around the factory so production costs have decreased by 50 percent and water usage has decreased by over 60 percent.

Walmart and Costco have already started selling these new "green" milk jugs and people have already started complaining. People are saying it doesn't pour easily and causes spills every time regardless of the "no spills" claims.

The old milk jugs were hard enough for kids, how are they ever going to be able to pour these two gallon jugs with no spouts? There are no doubts mothers everywhere are finding pools of milk on their kitchen floors.

The new milk jugs are made with foil inner seals, reports Flikr, which keep the milk even fresher than before when hitting the grocers shelves. These jugs come in two gallons rather than one. I'm sure all those mothers with huge families are celebrating.

I have no kids and need to save some cash so I have no qualms about this new square milk jugs. I haven't seen them in my area -- Jacksonville, Florida -- yet, but bring them on.
