Got Snow? Send Pictures: All 50 States with Snow Cover

Patrick Marsh Strives to Create Snow Shot of America

Nannette Richford
Patrick Marsh, a student employee of NOAA's Severe Storms Laboratory is requesting images of snow on the ground in all 50 states to compile a google map to commemorate the event of snow cover in all states at the same time. Currently all states, with the possible exception of Florida and Hawaii have snow on the ground. According to Patrick's blog, "Ramblings of a Graduate Student", Marsh initially relied on reports that the mountain peaks of Hawaii were snow covered; at this point snow in the Hawaiian mountains has not been verified, but Marsh is hopeful.

According to reports and images from NWF Daily News as of 2 pm today, snow was falling in the northern portions of the Florida panhandle making Marsh's goal within reach. Predictions of 2 to 4 inches of ground cover were slated for late this afternoon.

As of 3:04 pm CST, Marsh had received photos of snow-covered grounds in 43 out of 50 states and hopes to reach his goal before the end of the day. Supporters from across the US have joined forces to support the goal by sending emails and images directly to Marsh. He is currently receiving approximately two emails per minute and has received a total of nearly 500 emails. You can contact Marsh with photos at snow@forwarn.org.

A list of states he is still looking for is posted on his blog which is being updated throughout the day.

According to Marsh's tweets and his blog, he intends to create a collage of images as a "snow shot of America" to verify that all 50 states were snow covered on the same day. Marsh reports that it is unclear when or if it has ever occurred in history.

Those in Florida and Hawaii are encouraged to send any photos they may have of current snow cover, as these too states pose the biggest challenge.

You can follow Patrick Marsh on twitter to receive updates and join him in his race to capture snow on the ground in all 50 states on the same day.

Even if Marsh fails to capture images of snow in all 50 states, he says 48 or 49 is still an accomplishment.
