The Dark Knight Rises teaser trailer is still a few days away from release. But before the trailer debuts in front of the Harry Potter finale, the Dark Knight -- or at least his logo -- will rise in poster form. It has been common practice for Batman fans to make Photoshopped posters as they wait for the new movie to come out. Yet Warner Bros. finally released an official poster Monday, a teaser that suggests things aren't getting any brighter in Gotham.
There are no shots of Batman, Bane, Catwoman or any other old and new figures. But the Batman logo is clearly made out, albeit in an outline above crumbling Gotham skyscrapers. Although the movie is called The Dark Knight Rises, it seems Gotham is no closer to getting back on its feet after the punishment the Joker gave it in the last film.
Crumbling buildings isn't new in the Christopher Nolan universe; there were a lot of them in limbo in the third act of Inception. But the Batman world isn't a dream world in any sense of the word. The destruction and chaos in The Dark Knight was very real, and the poster is fueling expectations that even worse damage is to come.
Of course, the movie's biggest challenge is to top the action and madness of the last film, which is quite a hard task. At the least, fans hope that the "threequel" isn't a series-killing disappointment, like so many other third chapters to comic book franchises. Yet if anyone is trusted to buck that trend, it's Nolan and his Batman team.
Whether they actually do it won't be answered for another 12 months, so fanatics are looking for any clue possible. They'll have a lot more solid clues to go on when the trailer comes out Friday along with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. But it will probably be slightly vague as well, just like the poster, especially since filming is still in progress.
After this week, there probably won't be any more teasers for several months, as future posters and trailers will likely be saved until the fall. Therefore, Warner Bros. will have to throw a few significant bones to keep fans pacified until then. But given that these are the very first looks at the movie, that alone should be enough.
The first poster has already assured fans that Nolan won't be getting soft, although few suspected he would. But more concrete signs will come in the trailer, which seems to be as anticipated in some circles as Deathly Hallows Part 2 itself.
Since these are the last days before the last Harry Potter, it would take quite a lot to steal some of the spotlight from the boy wizard. Yet the first Dark Knight Rises teasers are doing just that, which shows Batman's vast power in the Muggle world.
