Goulash

An Unusual Recipe

Cami Farmer Tozer
This is an unusual goulash recipe that my siblings and I grew up looking forward to every time my mom made it. After doing a bit of research on goulash I found that the one common denominator in most of the recipes is paprika. But this recipe does not contain paprika. Probably because my mom learned to cook this on an army base in the 60s and there wasn't any readily available. However, it was one of our favorite dishes growing up.

1 pound hamburger

1 diced onion

4 or 5 peeled diced potatoes

½ stick of butter or margarine

8 ounce bag of egg noodles

Seasoning to taste

Brown the hamburger in a large skillet. Add onion, potatoes, and butter along with 1 cup of water. Let simmer until potatoes are done. This part can be speeded up by first microwaving the potatoes for a few minutes, not an option back in the 60s. After the potatoes and onions are tender, add the uncooked egg noodles and enough water to cover them to the skillet. Add seasoning to taste. My mom always used seasoned salt, I like to add Nature's Seasoning. But you could even add paprika! Cook until the noodles are done. I usually serve this with a crisp salad and some bread with jam.
