Gourd Art

Carmella Mae Dunkin
I planted the seed, and waited for rain,

oh my this can be such a huge pain.

Finally it came, the rain it did fall,

my little seed it sprouted,

even though it quite small.

Now a few weeks later,

small fruit it does bear,

pollination time, is now in the air.

We pollinate the fruit,

so that growth we insure,

a few weeks more now,

and the fruit is like wood!

Don't take it off the vine yet,

you must wait till it drys,

then you can paint it, with acrylics and dyes.

A little seed once you were, but now you are a grown gourd.

Now for the sadness, now we must part,

you are no longer just a gourd,

now you're a work of art!

Oh, gourds are actually a vegitable that grows on a vine! They are in the squash family. The secret is to not pick the fruit as they appear, but to let them grow and grow, and grow somemore until they are big, rock hard, and the stem dries out. If they are picked before this time, they will rot and turn to mush, YUK!!!

Thank you all for the lovely comments on the poem and my husbands art work. Yes hubby did that gourd, all with a wood burner! Took a long time to do too. Sadly, hubby now has COPD from mold, and from not wearing his resperator while cleaning, sanding, and burning gourds! Now he can no longer burn gourds, : (
