Gout attacks usually occur at night while you are asleep. It creeps up on you and will surprise you with the severity of pain with which you are woken. Depending on your type of gout, meaning whether it is acute gout or whether it has moved onto chronic gout, the severity of symptoms will vary.
There are four major gout causes:
Your body is producing too much uric acid during the metabolism of purines
Your body is unable to eliminate uric acid effectively
Genetic defect in metabolism, which causes overproduction and retention of uric acid
Your purine intake is too high due to a purine rich diet
Some of the circumstances under which you may experience gout symptoms:
Obesity
Heavy alcohol consumption, especially beer
Diets rich in purine
Diets that are very low in calories '" crash diets with fast weight loss
Medications '" mostly the use of diuretics (drugs that increase urine secretion) and immune system suppressors
Chronic kidney disease
Myeloma (tumour or growth of cells normally found in bone marrow)
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
Psoriasis (chronic, hereditary, recurrent dermatosis)
Stress
High cholesterol
Diabetes and insulin resistance
Heart disease
Surgery
Joint injuries '" gout is attracted to joints that have been damaged in the past
Too much exercise
Infections
To help you cope with gout, you will have to do something about the causes mentioned.
If, however, you do not pay attention to what is causing your gout attacks, you are in for a rough ride. Nights with little sleep and a lot of pain, not being able to be yourself and live life to the fullest, robbed of your freedom because of the lack of mobility, withdrawing from society and being home bound more often than not.
This is without mentioning the damage to your joints, kidney stones and renal failure to name but a few. Only you can change the outcome by taking action as soon as possible!
