Government Grants: Fact or Fiction?

Keith Dailey
There is an urban myth that everyone is familiar about: the government has too much money and is willing to give some away if we hit the right buttons. This system is also more commonly known as government grants.

If you do your research on government grants, you will find out the truth. It is a much different case than what the government would like you to believe. It may be true that the federal government issues tons of grants for research and other causes for the community annually, though.

Most of these grants help small businesses take off that would otherwise sink. By doing this, the government is able to level the playing field in the world of business to get the little ones started. However, this is also a way for them to get funds to worthy non-profit causes with a mission statement that could help the culture and the community at large.

Another thing that they have failed to inform us is that all the information regarding these government grants can be reached free of charge. What the government seeks are the most qualified non-profit charities and businesses for them to help out. By going directly to the government's website on grants, you can use their search engine to find numerous sources that can guide you. The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance would also be a great way to find certain grants by topic for your specific area of expertise.

What we fail to understand is that these grants imply not having to work in order to receive the government's money. However, the application itself and the competition in receiving a government grant takes about as much hard work as any job, if not more. Keep in mind that there is a lot of competition for these limited resources. A lot of people may get the government grants, but a lot of people also do not get the money they need. It is a gamble to get a government grant; remember this before you step into the process.

It is important to have patience and to learn about each step and stage in developing your application for a government grant. Spend a lot of time and tender loving care in doing so, so that you can thoroughly understand the myriad of government agencies out there. This will help you find the one that is most likely to grant you the grant.

Filling out the paperwork for the grant itself and submitting the proposal is a complete discipline all in its own, so you may need some professional help. However, if you end up doing well, are patient, and have a worthwhile project, the government is sure to help you. It just takes time and a little learning experience to become successful.
