Governor Eliot Spitzer Should Resign Immediately

In my opinion, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer should resign his position immediately. The crimes he has committed, not just against the state, but against his family, are inexcusable. I have heard others make the argument that other politicians in this nation's history have committed adultery, and even visited prostitutes. Such a precedent doesn't make this kind of behavior right. There are many upstanding politicians, and ordinary citizens, that don't feel the need to patronize escort services and prostitution rings.

In addition to this one incident, Governor Spitzer's career has been plagued by scandal, most notable his use of a New York police force to monitor the activities of his Republican opponent. He has also faced criticism for his flippant remarks regarding (in his opinion) harsh punishment for those involved in a previous prostitution scandal. Putting these two events together, the people of New York and America can see where Governor Spitzer stands on the issue of marital fidelity. He has even made remarks in the wake of these scandals that perhaps he is not "naturally suited" for political office. This perhaps is the wisest thing he has said throughout his tenure as governor.

But why should he resign? For me, the answer is simple: Eliot Spitzer cannot be trusted. He has proven time and again that he is dishonest, and worse, will use his position of authority solely for his own gain and pleasure, rather than focusing on what is best for his constituency. I know I speak for more than just myself when I say I want my leaders to be trustworthy. True, all politicians must occasionally deviate from their planned course of action in order to accommodate the needs of the state, but there is no excuse for deviant criminal acts. There is no excuse to claim to be a supporter of the war on crime, then use valuable police resources for your own political game. And there is certainly no excuse to put your marriage, reputation, and office on the line to visit a high-priced escort -- who, fancy words aside, is no better than the women who walk the street at night. In this light, I think the public should call for Governor Spitzer's immediate resignation.
