Governor General Adrienne Clarkson: Inducted into the Kainai Chieftainship

The duties of a governor general is to represent the ruling British Monarch in Canada. The governor general carries out administrative duties and also celebratory or festive activities. We will now look at the three female governor generals of Canada, two of which were from Montreal.





First Canadian born Governor General of Canada


Adrienne Clarkson, distributed Order of Canada monies across the country to commemorate the the 50th year anniversary of the first Canadian born Governor General of Canada, Charles Vincent Massey.


Kainai Chieftainship


Adrienne Clarkson was inducted as an honorary member of the Kainai Chieftainship, as a member of the Blood Tribe during a traditional ceremony held at Red Crow Park, Alberta on July 23, 2005. The Kainai Nation is one of the first nations of Canada. They are Niitsítapi, of the Blackfoot Confederacy. Along with her appointment, she was bestowed the name, Grandmother of Nations. The last governor general before her to be inducted into the Kainai Chieftainship, was Edward Shreyer, in 1984. Adrienne Clarkson was the third female to be inducted.


On September 15, 2005, Adrienne Clarkson announced a new Award for the Canadian North, the Governor General's Northern Medal. This award is given to people who serve the great Canadian North. Sheila Watt-Cloutier, chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference was the first person to receive the award in 2005 for her work in global warming issues in the Arctic. Nellie Cournoyea and Georges Erasmus both politicians of Native Origin have won the medal since then.
