Governor Sarah Palin is the GOP Vice Presidential Candidate

John McCain Picks an Unlikely Candidate

Carol Wilkins
Sarah Palin is no stranger to trailblazing moves. She is the youngest and first female to ever sit in the highest office in Alaska. She is an unlikely choice for John McCain but may very well give him the key to the Presidential vote.

Sarah Palin's Background
Palin moved to Alaska as infant and grew up as an outdoor enthusiast. She also was involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and won a beauty contest title. She married Todd Palin, a native Yup'ik Eskimo, and they have 5 children. Her youngest child, born in April of 2008, has Down's Syndrome. She was criticized for not allowing the results the genetic prenatal testing to sway her decision to have the baby. In response, she said, "I'm looking at him right now, and I see perfection. Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?" Her oldest son, Track, currently serves in the Army. She has three daughters still at home, Bristol, 17, Willow 13, and Piper, 7.

In 1992, Palin began her political career in the Wasilla city council. She made an unsuccessful attempt at the lieutenant governor's seat in 2002. In 2003, she was appointed Ethics commissioner to the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission but resigned in 2004 in protest over unethical practices in her own political party. Famous for her ethical reform, Palin ran for governor of Alaska in 2006 and ousted then-incumbent governor Murkowski in the Republican primary. Though outspent by her Democratic opponent, Palin won the governorship.

Palin on Social Issues
Governor Sarah Palin has espoused strong pro-life views and lives them daily. Pro-life supporters need only look to her child with special needs as proof.

She is also a firm believer in that marriage is between one man and one woman. She was supportive of Alaska's constitutional ban on same-sex marriages in 1998.

Palin's Lack of Experience
Already there is speculation about Sarah Palin's youth and lack of experience. The same could be said of Barack Obama. However, Palin balances McCain in his less than conservative social issues and he balances her in experience. Palin has proved to be a formidable force in Alaskan politics and has done amazing work with budgetary needs and ethics.

Palin is just the ticket to get Republican voters energized and motivated to capture the White House. Already women voters, particularly the Christian pro-lifers, are excited about the upcoming election. Even Hillary Clinton fans are being swayed by the entrance of this strong female candidate. After months of disappointing views and stagnant debates, voters have something to look forward to.

  • Gov. Sarah Palin is the youngest and the first female governor of Alaska.
John McCain may have hit two important demographics with his VP choice: Christian evangelicals and pro-Hillary Clintonites.

Great article with lots of good information. Sarah Palin just might be the answer to our problems. We have got to get away from the "same old same old". It isn't working. She has fresh ideas and and more "life" experience than all 3 of the "guys" put together. We need a representative in Washington that knows what it is like to raise a family the hard way.

A poll bounce for McCain is sure to follow! Thanks for sharing the info on Palin; like most everybody else, I am still trying to find out more about her.

Wow! She almost sounds like Superwoman. It is so great to see a politician that doesn't believe that life is only for the perfect, the planned, and the priviledged. She has my vote!

I like her attitude about her child with Down's syndrome. Maybe I missed it elsewhere but it jumped out at me in your piece.

I like Kim's comment. I was still surprised at McCain's decision.
