Beans and peas are a healthy addition to any diet, as they are low in fat and cholesterol, and high in protein, fibre and other essential vitamins and minerals. If you are looking for something new or out of the ordinary, try Goya Green Pigeon Peas.
Price and Availability
I purchased a 425g (15 oz) can of Goya Green Pigeon Peas from my local commissary when they were on sale for $0.67. I had not tried pigeon peas before, so I was intrigued and interested to find out what this product would be like.
Product Details
Goya Green Pigeon Peas are a product of Ecuador and are distributed by Goya Foods Inc, Secaucus, NJ 07096 and are touted as "The Caribbean's best loved bean".
Nutrition Facts
Each 125g (1/2 cup) serving contains 70 calories, no fat or cholesterol, 390mg sodium, 14g carbohydrate, 4g dietary fibre, and 4g protein. Each serving also contains 15% vitamin C, 2% calcium, and 6% iron.
Goya Green Pigeon Peas are low in calories, are fat and cholesterol-free and do not contain any sugar. The peas are high in fibre and protein, which is news regardless of your dietary requirements. But the peas are high in sodium, containing 16% of your daily allowance in each serving. However, this can easily be remedied by draining and thoroughly rinsing the peas before use.
Serving Suggestions
Goya Green Pigeon Peas can be served in a number of ways. I added a can to salad, comprised of lettuce, tomato, onion, sweet corn and celery, which helped complement the other colours, flavours and textures. If you are looking for a traditional recipe to add them to, try Arroz con Gandules, which is rice with pigeon peas. Or go to www.goya.com for additional recipe suggestions.
Recommendation
On their own, I found Goya Green Pigeon Peas to be a little bland, but mixed into a salad and seasoned well they helped enhance the taste and visual appeal of my meal. If you are looking for a heart-healthy product to try that is fat-free, cholesterol-free and a good source of fibre and protein, I would recommend Goya Green Pigeon Peas.
