Goya Ripe Plantains Bring Sweet Latin Flair to Any Meal

Review: Goya Ripe Plantains

Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez
I love plantains - particularly when they're fried and candied! While I order a serving of plantains every now and then from places like my local Cuban restaurant, I haven't tried making any in my own home... Until I saw Goya ripe plantains in my grocer's frozen section.

I wasn't sure what I was going to get when I decided to try making some plantains out of a box from the freezer. But, I know Goya - they're a top name in Latin food products. So I figured that Goya ripe plantains would taste at least decent.

It was worth a shot, right?

Great Flavor

I popped the Goya ripe plantains into my microwave and zapped them as suggested for 3-1/2 minutes. Out they came nice, hot, and smelling good. But would they taste good?

These plantains are delicious, moist and, much to my delight, sweet. I remark on sweetness, because I've had some plantains over the years which had been cooked, but they tasted a little too tart - as if they weren't quite fully ripe yet. Yes, the Goya package contains what it says it does: "ripe" plantains.

I was also impressed by something else when I took time to examine the back of the Goya ripe plantains box: just two ingredients! Ripe plantains and soybean oil. Wow, these plantains are good and wholesome.

Nutrition

Goya ripe plantains make a good choice for either a side dish with a Latin food entrée or, as I often eat cooked plantains - a dessert. Plantains are in the banana family and are a fruit. As such, they do contain sugar, but they also bring potassium, a bit of dietary fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and plantains look good in a number of other nutritional categories, too.

Goya ripe plantains also have no trans fatty acids.

Here's a nutritional breakdown of Goya ripe plantains for a 2-ounce serving based on the food label on the back of the Goya box:

110 calories
21 calories from fat
2 grams of fat
0 grams saturated fat
0 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol
9 (mg) sodium
319 grams of potassium
22 grams of carbohydrates
2 grams of dietary fiber
13 grams of sugar
0 grams of protein
Vitamin A 12% of typical person's daily recommended intake
Vitamin C 17%
5% iron

As you can see, Goya ripe plantains overall make a healthy snack, side dish, or dessert!

Goya ripe plantains cost $1.99 for an 11-ounce box at Sweetbay Supermarket in Central Florida. Of course, prices vary based on location and the store. At whatever price though, be sure you check out Goya ripe plantains in your grocer's frozen food section. You'll find they make a terrific complement to many Latin meals and taste great on their own, too!
