Graduate from Online School with These 5 Tips

Idalia Benavides
Are you an online student? Whether you're taking online classes through your college or university that you also take regular classes at, or if you're taking classes through lets say The University of Phoenix there's some things that you should know and try to keep in mind at all times. In this article I am going to give you the best 5 tips that you should always take into consideration when starting a class on the computer.

- Get ahead as much as possible.
When you're going to take online classes, the website at which you'll use as your classroom will usually give you access to all of your course materials. There you should find the syllabus; the syllabus is usually set in stone so download it to your computer right away and print it. Once you have the syllabus printed try to get a lot of the work done if possible and mark it on your calendar or there.

- Keep a planner with all of your due dates.
This is very important! Inside of your class website you'll usually also find a course calendar; if you don't find one there then you're going ot have to go through your syllabus looking for due dates to make your own calendar. Print this out and carry it with you at all times; make sure to include the days that you need to do participation on also, and then make sure that you cross things out as you complete them.

- Stay in contact with your counselor and your financial aid advisor.
Your counselors will be your biggest source for motivation. Online counselors are usually the best, as their job is basically to keep you enrolled through the end of the program. As for you financial aid advisor, it's always good to stay in contact with him/her to constantly ask about ways in which you can minimize college costs. They may be able to help you apply for scholarships or grants that you can get based on your grades, ethnicity, major, or past performance.

- Make contact with your classmates and professors more than once during the term.
Now this may not seem like something important to you, but when you're not meeting regular people at a traditional school, you should definitely make an effort to make some contacts in your classroom. Remember that this is college and you should take advantage of everything that's there no matter what. Try to set up study sessions with your classmates or just chat sessions to get to know each other better outside of the classroom. You should also email your professor a couple of times during the course just to stay on top of things with him/her about how you're doing; they may even be able to give you some career pointers.

- Don't skip one single assignment ever.
Now this is the single most dangerous thing that you can do. Do not ever think that it's okay to skip a single assignment no matter how small it is. If you think that you may not make a deadline, contact your professor ahead of time and work something out with him/her. If you skip one assignment that could jeopardize your final grade more than you know and it may also cause you to not be able to receive financial aid in the future. Another big consequence from this action is the beginning of procrastination. If you miss one assignment you'll all of a sudden get lazy and not want to do the rest; don't let this happen!
