Graduation Memories: Liberty High School Class of 2003

AKA Get Me the Hell Out of Here

Michelle K. Miller
In June of 2003, I graduated from Liberty High School, in Bedford, Virginia. I remember not being able to contain myself because I was so excited. My freshman and sophomore years had been pretty good, but junior and senior years had been terrible. I was ready to get the hell out of there and never look back.

Eight years ago, after our valedictorian I took my place in line with the Fs and Gs, ready to receive my diploma [holder]. I was getting annoyed by waiting because some of the more hateful people in my class were making fun of me, per usual. Instead of responding, I held by breath and held my head high.

The line got shorter and shorter, and when I heard them call "Michelle Farrar," I stepped forward to receive my holder and have my tassel turned. I had to keep myself from bursting out laughing because one of my male classmates that I had known since seventh grade yelled, "YEAH! Go Ferrari!" [My maiden name warranted a lot of variations].

I sat through the rest of my classmates' names, anxiously awaiting the end. When we were pronounced the graduates of Liberty High School's class of 2003, we tossed our caps into the air. I was finally free of that horrible school.

Looking back, you couldn't pay me to go back and do it all over again... not at that school anyway.
