Graduation Poem - Ghazal of Commencement

J L Carey Jr
Long has the winter corn stood weathering in the field,

And still, all ears, it listens to the gentle wind.

There is a silent song that makes the pipe smoke dance,

Quiet as a doves gray wings in the gentle wind.

Times sweet wine is cold on the tongue, but warm going

Down, like the suns golden rays through the gentle wind.

We turn the earth to find our dark truth; that we are

Children of the soil, fleeting as the gentle wind.

Understanding is not a thousand cobs of corn,

Nor is it the combines roar in the gentle wind.

J. C. - Tasting the wine helps, but understanding

Takes a lifetime of breathing in... the gentle wind.

Wow. I really liked this. I've never heard of ghazals in English, although I'm very familiar with the Arabic and Urdu forms. The only feedback I'd give is that in a traditional ghazal the first couplet usually has AA rhyme structure to stress the introduction of the theme, but of course in poetry we don't always stick to the strict guidelines do we? : )
